I think the Studio build is inspiring, as the "outside" viewer looking in I hear the changes in sound quality as you progress. Also you mention the differences from types of fabric down to the type of Rockwool to get, something I'll take into consideration when I set up my studio. I'll soon be moving myself, and all of your tips and tricks will surely come in handy for my next studio setup. Oh and I decided to get the sample pack, downloading it right now as I'm typing. Excited to see what's in there, and who knows....maybe I'll reach out to get in touch with you sometime soon :) I've hit a wall, a writers block...and it has taken me so long to push through. I feel like I'm slowly getting back, and now thanks to you and things like the Masterclasses I have invested in, some new gear etc...My desire to make music and inspiration is slowly coming back. Thanks a lot Jon for every video you put out, I have not watched them all...and neither am I one to comment most often, but I greatly appreciate you keeping this up. I'm not quite sure about one thing. I thought that the foam squares were suppose to sit on top or under the wool? You cut the holes to insert the squares to them completely burying them. Doesn't that defeat the purpose as now it all sits at the same level?

Can you post a link of the seller for those rubber squares for the studio floor? And the yellow ones for the walls :) And what type of aluminium sheet is it that you´re using on the floor? A link? :) I'm about to do the same with my studio :)

I really wonder which acoustician advised you on the floating floor. The sylomer will definitely not stop construction or train noise because any sounds from outside are not only coming through the floor but flanking through your walls and ceiling which aren’t actually decoupled or soundproofed. You don’t have a MSM system, so only decoupling the floor is a waste of money (in your current design) And the second big no-go for such a lightweight floor is it will act as a big drumhead and reasonate even if filled with rockwool. It’s a shame because you probably have a decent mass in your (I assume) existing concrete floor. If you would have had the possibility to measure in REW with and without the osb/sylomer floor, you’d be able to clearly see it. That said, good for you that you’re figuring things out along the way, but it’s a good lesson you will learn in proper build planning and designing. You’ll end up with an (above) average sounding room that might cost as much as a professionally designed one. But you did it yourself, which is an achievement in itself!

We just testet it today. As calculated it’s reducing sound to the downstairs office by almost 50%. All other reasons for this build is explained in the video. I know it’s not ideal but for the room I have the best I can do and if I ever move with the studio I can seal the entire studio and raus the floor even more

Downstairs office and hiding cables is a reason to float the floors. But, I’d advise not doing it before checking what your building is sitting on. I have a new room. Walked around outside and noticed the building is sitting on a sand/gravel. My room is made with concrete blocks on 4 sides. I bring that up because during a vocal tracking session, a delivery (semi) truck drove by. No rumbling in the floor, and nothing got through the concrete wall. Absolutely nothing bled into the take. Just like any part of our art, there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach. If I floated my floor, other than not seeing my cables, I would’ve wasted a whole lot of money. Always assess the need first.

Lol.. everyone underestimates every crafters- work.. always:D but i get you.. i am pretty much done with my floating floor now. I did a whole framework with rubber pads under it filled it with rockwool, and covered it with panels just as yours. Its a lot of work! And weight to move .up, down, its exhausting^^ but worth it!

Hi there great to see the nice work going on but I got one or two questions. First is why haven't you been taking the acoustic measurements of the room as you proceed. I mean take the measurements of the originally room then take another once you put the floor another measurement after the side panels are put and another once the ceiling is done ..... that way one could exactly know what exactly got improved or not or got worse...? secondly will you be working with diffuser and if so where and why exactly.....?

The floor will show up as worse in a measurement. He doesn’t necessarily need diffusion. What will be needed is to add additional hard surface area to bring some life back into the room, because the room will sound dead. Before finishing off those last boxes, I’d change most of the remaning boxes into membrane absorbers. With the simple addition of some mdf, vinyl or plywood you can target problem frequencies way beyond what those 400mm of absorption only can do. If calculated correctly they can be very narrow Q, high amplitude absorbers in the sub frequencies while also reflecting back some highs. Look into that!

Hey Jon, es ist nichts wirklich wichtiges, aber für dich als Perfektionist: Die OSB Platten sind mit der Schrift nach oben und das ist die Unterseite. Vlt. & Whrs. war es ja eh nur der Test und du weist das. Ich will nur helfen, nicht klugscheißen.... Wenn du die erste Platte mit der Schrift nach oben machst, müssen alle mit der Schrift nach oben, wegen der Nut und der Feder. Ich weis es ist nichts wichtiges, aber hinterher ärgert es einen. Ich bin echt gespannt wie das Studio am ende aussieht. Freu mich schon. Grüße aus Karlsruhe

Not sure how many designs you went through before committing to what you are trying to construct now, namely specifying your acoustic design, FYI “a room within a room” is not a studio acoustic design. I would highly recommend you re-visit your design to include some other options that would help you benefit form the amount of space you currently have to work with and decide which acoustical design you are trying to achieve. This would help eliminate some the confusion your viewers have. I have also yet to hear you mention any ideas to possibly change how you might enter this studio, consider changing the location of your speakers and the direction you will be facing while sitting at your main desk. If you reverse your design, you can keep natural light in from the windows and use them as part of your acoustic design. Another recommendation is to add angles to your walls to form a semi-hexagonal shape and get rid of the rectangular shape you currently have for a reflection free zone (RFZ). This could possibly allow for walking space behind your acoustic panels to access your heating unit for maintenance in the future.
