To bypass a preamp on any audio interface the interface MUST have separate line inputs not xlr/line but just Line inputs. Line inputs have an fixed gain amp unlike the preamps on the interface have variable gain amps.

For anybody using an Apollo. The twins don’t have a true bypass for the internal preamp but on the 8 channel or 8p Apollo’s, you can go to settings and set any channel to bypass for true bypass, just not on the twins. Not sure about the newer x4’s but that was also a big reason why I got the 8p instead of the twin.

@@poseidonsoundz curious what do you usually do for the vocals with your mic gain setting wise ? I know it’s all situational but I’m curious also I’m recording guitars for two songs tomorrow I’ve used the great river before but sometimes I feel like im pushing the output more than I should when I should have the gain higher and the output lower any suggestions?
@poseidonsoundz
@poseidonsoundz Жыл бұрын
@@domjoseph2007 @Dom Joseph That really depends on how your mic handels the gain. I was using a tlm 103 for a very long time as my main mic and I was able to drive gain a lot more(I believe around 35-40 for vocals ) using that mic as opposed to my Manley ref c that is very sensitive to driving the gain(I use the - 10db pad that comes on the mic to help bring down some of the gain before it hits my DAW). I would use my ears and the meters in the DAW. As long as it has the tone I'm going for and I'm not too hot or low on the DAW meters I'm fine.

Dope video bro. Definitely got some nice gear goin my dude. I'm pretty much a hobbyist/recording artist and my recording chain is WA-87 1st gen, into a Golden Age Pre 73 mkIII into a FMR Audio RNC1773 compressor into an Apogee Element 24 with the pres bypassed. I recently put some acoustic treatment on the walls in my lab so the vocals have been coming out pretty decent. bout to drop some music for the hell of it and see what gives. Keep pushin fam!

Appreciate it fam. I hear that golden age pre is 👌🏾 How do you like the Wa-87?
@BeatsBangcomtv
@BeatsBangcomtv 2 жыл бұрын
@@poseidonsoundz The Golden Age Pre is decent for the money. Definitely gives you a Neve vibe at a fraction of the cost. It really helps vocals cut through a dense mix. The WA-87 is good mic and works well on my voice. Has a really nice midrange with a smooth top end. It’s based off the 87 from the late 60s, early 70s so it’s not as bright as the 87ai, but a really solid mic.

In order to bypass the Apollo’s preamp you would need to go into the pre with a female XLR into channel of the Apollo with 1/4 in TRS. ( From everything I’ve researched and spoken with the folks at Sweetwater that’s the proper approach)
@poseidonsoundz

I'm happy you brought this to the conversation. Back when I was looking into it I came across someone who contacted UAD about the bypassing of its interfaces pre amp. They relayed to him that although you can "bypass" it , its not a true bypassing of it's circuitry. Meaning the signal is still to some degree affected by the internal preamp, now we can debate how much of a difference that actually makes to the signal but I think its insignificant. I'll wait until the next generation of interfaces to see if UAD makes one that truly bypasses the pre amp, even then I'm completely happy with my set up and only really considered switching to an apollo to eliminate the UAD satellite from taking up desk space.
@hoppiedamenace9143
@hoppiedamenace9143 3 жыл бұрын
Poseidon Soundz That makes since and I believe I’ve heard the same concerning circuitry. If you do decide to upgrade I recommend keeping your UAD Satellite as it adds dsp to your workload. UAD plug-ins can be really massive in size so the extra DSP definitely helps. And thanks for your vid

Nice video man! I've just brought a great river ME-1NV, Not used it much yet though. I currently have it plugged into my focusrite clarett, but I cant bypass them pre's so I'm thinking of getting an audient id22 because you can bypass the pres on them! Did you notice a difference in sound when you did away with your focusrite and bypassed the pre's?
@poseidonsoundz
@poseidonsoundz 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I did notice. Even before I was actually driving the gain and backing off the output, I still noticed a slight difference in overall clarity, but I think I would also contribute part of that to the AD converters in the apogee duet 2.

@@poseidonsoundz I hear you! I couldn't really hear much of a difference when going into the clarett? I think them pres do colour your sound even at 0 gain. Still gotta try that saturation! How much (on average) do you pump up the input and trim back the output?
@poseidonsoundz

@@therealnormz8770 about 35-40 on the gain knob and the ouput between 10 o'clock and 12 o'clock if that makes sense.

If you have a Clarrett 4 pre go directly line in using a line input that's the only way to bypass mic pres on audio interfaces due to line in is using an fixed gain amp.

What do you think of the great river? Is it worth spending the 1k for it vs the built in pre on an UAD Apollo?
@poseidonsoundz
@poseidonsoundz 3 жыл бұрын
For me Yes. I love it, it's my favorite piece in my vocal chain and I would buy it again. The Apollo has a great built in pre amp. I just think with actual hardware pre amps the color characteristics are hard to emulate. It's so easy to dial in harmonic saturation with the great river and it can give vocals or whatever you're running through it a lot of body. It almost feels like it transforms your mic. If you're just getting into recording maybe hold off on it an maximize the potential of the uad and some of the pre amp emulation plug ins uad offers. But when you're ready to take it up a level analog or hardware defiantly makes a difference to the trained ear. And if you plan on making music for a long time, like I plan too I definitely believe the 1k is worth it... High quality vocal chain equipment tends to appreciate over time anyway.

I have tried the neve 1073 and it sounds great depending on other components in the vocal chain. I had the option to go neve but I wanted to do something "different" than the industry standard in hopes of creating a unique vocal chain. But of course the 1073 is legendary.
