As a hobbyist home producer I've had interesting results recording acoustic guitar using Apple's earbuds. The bud with the mic goes in the sound-hole and the other in my ear as a monitor (Note: I use an Adamas where the sound-hole is nowhere near the strings). I use a simple audio track in Garageband and add compression and reverb afterwards. I'm impressed with the deep lows that I get! Keep very still when you play :)

No recording engineer is going to say “Mr. McCartney, I've hooked up my iPhone ... ready to go when you are” but it's worth remembering that Michelle Shocked had a very successful album recorded on a Walkman Pro. Getting some ideas down counts for more than saving up for better equipment.

Maybe it depends on what you call 'big' but if you listen closely to the low frequencies you hear an 'underwater' effect or something 'woofy' on the phone recordings that you cannot deny once you heard it. Also the highs are not nice at all but in that case I could agree that the difference is not huge. Cheers.

I could be wrong, that "noise" you were discussing around 4:00 minutes sounds like distortion that comes from too much gain from the source. So, the smartphone's input mics are gained up too high. However, that makes sense for phone calls. The Neumann sounds SOOOOO much better, but the input could be gained down before recording. The same "low-mid" muddy sound is sort of present, but only to someone who knows what to look for. I enjoyed this video! Thank you for making it!

Have you ever considered to try picks from Essetipicks? They're very interesting because they're shaped in a different way than a standard plectrum, and using them i felt less tired playing and the strings lasted much longer in my opinion. These picks are made of various materials (from cheap Nylon and Kevlar to expensive ones made in coconut, tagua nut, bone, wood, galalith, horn and ceramic), but once you try one probably you won't get back to standard picks

I am planning to up my game as far as sound quality goes..there will be a lot of epic fails.. BTW the phone on the last take didn't do to bad. A bass guitar would have done wonders. It sounds great as it is. Maybe drums and keys turned dowm. a little.put in the mix. I started doing this search and this video intrgued me. I am going to do a little Audiio experimenting. The problem is there is ambient noise arround my house..fridge coming on etc. I think I'll use a lreal pro or KZbin backing tracks. Run that into my micrphone port on my windows 7..yeah it's old... Play my Strat copy ,bass and casio 4200 in direct..I'll probably have to get a preamp for the guitars. .yeah I am really looking forward to problems of the analogue to digital setup in my computer.. I' think that I should be able to go directly into the mic imputs on the computer.. I have no audio in on the computer. If this works I'll get back to you..I'm fairly sure there will be glitches.

Great video. Just perhaps some suggestions for a future video : Samsung have an app called soundcamp with Samsung pro audio drivers. It allows to plug a guitar right in the phone by USB or with an Irig (it was introduced on the Galaxy S6) and perhaps do another comparison of the recording done that way to see if there's any difference with the "pro recording studio" as advertised by Samsung ?

I'm listening thorugh some good quality speakers (in quite a low volume, I have to admit), but man, I barely can hear a difference. I'm truly amazed by how good the phone was. I can hear some details like the noise-glitch or the sparky, metalic sound here and there, as you pointed out, but that's far from awful. Maybe if I wear my headphones and/or pump up my volume I would hear a greater difference. And I'm sure the mic is better. But I don't think it's that much better.

Proof that dedicated devices tend to blow "general purpose" devices out of the water when compared on that single purpose :D For what it is the smartphone in this video's sound wasn't that bad. For. what. it. is. A multipurpose device with the ability to make a quick recording when "out and about" or when inspiration strikes at an inconvenient time. My old band recorded our rehearsals on a Samsung S3. Good enough for examining our mistakes and capturing jams/ideas. Nowhere near good enough to use professionally.

I'm just listening to the recording on my pc with a high-end JVC amp and speakers. The phone sounds more inferior but considering the size of the mic etc. It's not a surprise. But your phone is most of the time with you, so it is always there to record a new idea, a jam you want to listen back. I use it sometimes with the headphone mic attached somewhere near my neck, to record my SINGING backed by some rhythm guitar. I can do this anywhere. ZERO COST, ZERO HASSLE.

One more note: My 4-year-old sony smartphones' mic is a way better than my samsung galaxy S7 so it also depends to a certain degree on the model I think.

I'm assuming even if technology keeps improving, there will always be a physical limit to what you can pack into a phone. Even though the Neumann is called a "small diaphragm mic", that diaphragm is probably about 15mm or so in diameter. By comparison, the tiny mics in a phone have a diaphragm of maybe 2-4mm, so there's a lot less "tone catching surface". Even if there was no limit in cost, there'd always be one in physics.

I get what you're trying to say here, but I think a fair amount of the resolution differences are lost in the audio compression of KZbin. You must keep in mind that even professionally recorded material is likely to be played-back through the cheapest of drivers ( ear/headphones that come with a phone or even the TINY drivers of the phone itself ). Most folks don't (or can't) appreciate high quality audio, unfortunately.
