One other interesting example of filtering pre saturation - GUITAR AMPS! This is incredibly common practice in guitar preamp designs, notably amps like Marshalls, Friedmans, Soldanos, etc. The key to keeping these amps high gain and NOT flubby is carefully placed stages of filtering throughout the preamp section, not only cutting lows but also boosting highs. If this is not done properly in a medium or High gain amp, the distortion sounds muddy and terrible, has no articulation, and doesn’t sound good with palm mutes. This is also the same reason so many players put a tube screamer before their high gain amp - to tighten up the low end PRE distortion.

this is what got me digging into this in the first place. amp sims and how to make them SING! this technique is crucial - beyond just HPF the guitar input - great stuff!!! the mind reels! thank you again!

This is one of the best videos on Saturation I’ve seen in 8+ years of engineering. Thank you so much for this

Man, these videos on saturation and loudness have really dropped an avalanche of pennies on me. For so long Ive been trying to achieve this effect with eq and compression (and some saturation but not using it like this) and I didnt realise that correct use of saturation gets me in the ball park without even needing EQ or compression! Not only that, its started to lift the veil for me of 'WHY' professional audio engineers stuff sounds so much better than mine. For the first time I can understand what they would be doing different to what Ive been doing to achieve their results, I can see the bridge. Its not voodoo magic, its just proper taming of dynamics and enhancing things to make the sound richer. These things had been at the forefront of my mind, but my approach was wrong. Thank you so much dude.

What really lifts the veil is when you realize that engineers working with tape and analog consoles didn’t even have to worry about this. It just made their mixes sound better without them having to try. Ahh… simpler times. Haha.

I have the Looptrotter - stunning saturation device. Great sound and big RMS gains. The low safe and high smooth are game changers.

I just want to say I’m going to school now for audio engineering. I’ve been looking for unbiased sources of information for a while and I have to say I’m really glad I landed on your channel! The first video I saw was the transient life cycle. You’ve been a great source for all things audio! As a little request, it would be really great to hear you’re thoughts on expanders and maximizer if you haven’t done so already. But so far loving the channel!

Excellent topic - and timely with some current projects. Got me to rabbit-hole de emphasis curves. Thank you!

It does. This is sort of the philosophy behind the Vertigo VSM2 frequency selective modes!
@RecordingLounge3 жыл бұрын
The VSM2 blends in a bandpass filtered version of the output with the dry signal. It can be a little weird to get the level just right but it works similar to a multiband or pre emphasis filter kind of setup.

@@RecordingLounge VSM2 and Saturn are great with the multiband distortion approach. DW has a great vid using de- and re- in Reaper kzbin.info/www/bejne/fl6qpGClaJ52a9E I am trying to figure out how to do this in Studio One v5 - the Splitter tool is now implemented as plugin style - with the frequency split, you can multi-band ANYthing. i just want to figure out how to do the parameter linking that Dan W did in Reaper in S1.

Very cool thanks! Emphasis EQs unlock a lot of potential, they are also useful for compressors that have no sidechain options, I recommend Dan Worrall's video on the subject!
@RecordingLounge3 жыл бұрын
Agreed! I plan on doing a video about this for compressors as well!

Usually i do the saturation parallel and put a lowCut Filter for the kick before the saturation. But I have to try the de emphasis the next time
