Amazing tips....that border on philosophical-adroitness as much as practical production ones....you understand the "pitfalls and bottlenecks" very well! Sometimes, we, (in the mix so to speak) need to hear this "type" of advice in the same way reference mixes reset us and add "hope" to our true passion for success in this amazing business!

I've sucked for about 10 years, and really I still kinda suck, but here are my tips. 1. (I can't stress this enough) Use a reference. Honestly it will change your life. I went too long without referencing good mixes, or any mixes at all for that matter. 2. Find a DAW and stick with it. 3. Watch a ton of KZbin tutorials. 4. Download stems/ sign up for a service that gives you stems and lessons like Pro Mix Academy or whatever you like so you can actually work on something that isn't your own. 5. Gear doesn't matter (to a certain extent) So I've been making music for more than half of my life, I'm only 25. I didn't go to college nor do I have any real training in mixing. I do write, record, mix, and release my own music and have been doing so for a long time. Up until less than a year ago I've been quite bad, but references and Pro Mix Academy took me to the next level. I re-mixed my music of the past couple years, sent a song over to Glen Fricker and got him to listen on his Merciless Metal Mixes stream and he said not to change a thing. I recorded my friend's band's EP (except the drums), mixed it and mastered it. They wanted it mastered elsewhere so they send 'em to a studio, and the guy says "Who mixed this? It already sounds good". They get the masters back, and they sound very close to mine. Little do they know, I'm in an untreated bedroom with a pair of monitors you can get for like $200, some $100 interface, an SM57, and an Audio Technica AT-2020 (both mics are like $100), and it's all thrown into Mixcraft. If I can get results in my situation, you absolutely can too.

It’s funny what you said about Ill factor not letting people read song I have similar approach but I like to record them twice I’ll let them read first time as “ruff draft” then send them home with it for a week and by the next week the usually sing or rap it like it’s they’re favorite artist song...I feel like “listening” to the song and singing along to it like it’s someone else’s can be even more invaluable then memorizing in first place usually brings out emotion and nuances they didn’t even plan day 1

Great advice! In 24 bit record at -18 dbfs RMS. And don't peak beyond -6 dbfs peak. Oh Graham...You forgot about PZM microphones (pressure zone microphone). Same frequency response 20 - 20 000hz 360 degrees around the mike. Always start a mix in mono. When you have you mix great in mono (effects, compression) then start panning. - reference tracks are a mixed bag. Not all of the music we are mixing is commercial music. Back in the day they never used reference mixes. I am not saying you shouldn't do it. But you should be trying to get your "own" sound and not copying the latest radio hit. That reference track will have the cloud pulled down by mastering engineer. They hate the cloud (90 -250hz). At Seven Nations Studio we do quite a bit of 5.1 mixes. And yes, we listen to a lot of other 5.1 mixes but with the exception of Steve Wilson most 5.1 mixes of albums are just not good. I work at my Uncle's studio.

tip no. 1 is acutely true for me. i realized that i need to get back into the studio on sunday and rerecord my solo tracks because i made the mistake of recording them to click (which is usually not a bad thing) instead of play-along to the prerecorded supporting material (rhythms, textures). i put zero heart in those tracks and even though they are objectively in time, the timing sounds awkward and unnatural.

I use a lot of samples because I don't have the room or equipment to record real drums or the like, so I have to do a ton of stuff to get them where I want them. However... My guitar is running through an Orange Thunderverb that is in my closet into a cheap dynamic mic and I BARELY TOUCH IT. Sounds incredible I think what you're talking about is actually the problem with most samples, they are absolutely lifeless because they are too perfect

I ruined some good vocals...man..when i mute the beat...they dont seem like they're clipping..but when i turn on the beat...i can feel some kind of clipping in the vocals..and the problem is not the beat. And the waveform is NOT that big so you can say is from that. I donno what to do to make them sound good. I tried Izotope RX6 hoping that i can fix these issues...but nothing worked. Not even the eq. I think it may be from the mic...or because i have a low voice in that particular recording. Or maybe i need a better mic cable. I need some advice!

BMH i mix in Cubase 5...but the vocals were recorded in Audacity. I amplified them than i put on a limiter to make the waveform look the same (i did all this process in Audacity) and when i moved to Cubase i used that vocals. I think was my mistake to amplify them too much. Or maybe i need to change the mic. I have a lot of thoughts about that.

I had to sell my set up but I'm sorting out a computer and cubase pro 10 next year.. hopefully we could work together cos I'm really interested in the mixing and mastering side of it. I've been researching it for a while now so know most of the tips

Great advice Graham. Reference is stellar BTW. But yes, the songs I am hearing aren't that great. Listen to Dylan, listen to Neil Young, listen to Motown, etc. YOU'VE GOT TO HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY AND some life experience or challenge/ hardship to understand the emotion. How can you sing about an emotion you've never had. It's impossible. If it's not emotional then it's basically worthless. When you hear Kurt Cobain are you saying you don't hear the pain, the loneliness, the chaos in his life. Yeah, it's there.
