Scheps summarizes: stop overthinking. It's a very common tendency for guitarists to overthink everything

I definitely agree with two mics, or what I did recently was one mic and one DI through a Blue Guitar Blu Box cab sim. The two together were fantastic.

Glad to find out that I'm not the only one who often just grabs two complimentary mics and jams them in front of the center of the speaker lol

Terry Manning has used a single Rode NT Classic II tube mic slightly above & aimed down at the speaker on a bass cab with absolutely wonderful results using his Lucas preamp or a Groove Tubes Brick recording Wide Spread Panic. A 251 overhead on drums, with a modified/gutted & completely turned into a great mic in a C12VR body on the side, a vintage fet47 inside the kick, & a SM7 above the snare for reverb send. That's it. Sounds amazing.

If you have a 1x12 with two mics. When measuring the two mics say 57 at the center and a condenser more off to the side. Should the two mics still be equal distance from the speaker? Or should the condenser be pulled back a little further away from the speaker cause on the speaker edge there is less depth from the mic capsule to speaker than the 57 at the center cause of the shape of the speaker?

Do you know if he records acoustic guitar with two mics into a stereo track?
@BigFatCock0
@BigFatCock0 7 жыл бұрын
Most producers/engineers tend to just double the part rather than getting width from one performance.
@demagmusic
@demagmusic 7 жыл бұрын
I sometimes do that - one mike towards the neck and one towards the bridge, or as an X-Y pair. It adds a little width... but certainly not nearly as full sounding as double-tracking.

@@BigFatCock0 I go religiously by Bruce Swedien's ideology that you should always record stereo XY when possible. Only lead vocals and guitar solos in mono.

You guys seem a little too focused on the fact that hes using two mics. If you can capture the right sound with one mic, adding another mic just complicates things! Just my two cents. But who am i? Lol

Gear Head Productions ultimately I think you’re hitting on the point he’s getting at... Which is whatever sounds good. I’d be curious to find out how he treats both mics in the mix... Perhaps one sounds better than the other... Perhaps he adds dynamics or color to the other. I’m positive every session is different. Best wishes.👍

I mean that works, it's what I do because I can't afford a lot of mics, but if you have two different sounding mics you can capture a wider range of frequencies
@Syklonus
@Syklonus 4 жыл бұрын
Why should it complicate things? Unless you are printing the two mic sounds into one track and committing to that sound then there's no issue. If you take the sensible option and have the two mics on their own channels then you don't need to use that second mic if it isn't working, but it's better to have it there in case if does work.

I like this guy but let's face it: what he's basically saying is that his guitar recording skills are rather basic. I'm sure Andrew Scheps is a great sound engineer, but for guitar recording, I'll take advice from someone else.

Wow - I am SO glad that you, the great Chris Choir, have seen fit to imbue us with your erudition and wisdom. If I were you, I would immediately contact the artists (Daughtry, Green Day, The Heavy, Ziggy Marley, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lady Gaga, Black Sabbath, Bon Jovi, Beyoncé, Lana Del Rey, Our Lady Peace, Metallica, Weezer, Linkin Park, to name but a few) for whom he has worked and tell them. I'm sure they have absolutely no idea and would hang on your every word. (I'm sorry - what was your name again?....)

@@chrischoir3594 Yeah - only a couple hundred million album sales there. Figured I'd stick to the names you might know instead of the more current stuff that you wouldn't recognize. BTW, how IS the burger flipping going? Keep it up - you'll make assistant manager pretty soon if you play your cards right. And make those calls - I know Beyoncé will sit up and take notice when you tell her how 'overrated' Andrew Scheps is...
