Great series. I like recording with real amps and effects for inspiration alone. To me this is most important. I can then reamp with multiple mics or use amp sims and even mix both real and sims together. Talk about choices and not being left to use software alone.

Great info but what if you want to record all effects at the same time? i usually record one take with drive pedals + octaver +modulation and another one with all my effects on. I choose later if the effected tracks fit in the mix. Most of the cases they do fit. Thanks!

Love the series ! Beware though, I think this guitar's compressor settings were a bit too harsh. Big chords at 6:30 of the video, compressor kicking in fast is really audible.

Excellent video! Extremely important advice. Quick question though - in the final tone example at 6:25, it sounds like there's a hard limiter with about a .25 second attack time on the guitar that is really aggressively clamping down on the dynamics. Is this deliberate? and if so, is it part of the player's setup or was it something done after the fact?

Hi Josh, what you hear there is a side effect of crosstalk from the amp into Geert's headset microphone. We tried to minimize it, but at these amp levels it can’t be avoided in all cases.

I have a TLM 103 and I use it to record amplifiers, but sometimes I'm afraid of high gain levels that it receives from the amplifiers, can it spoil? Is there any parameter I should follow, any tips?!! Excellent video, great

@GeorgNeumannGmbH
@GeorgNeumannGmbH 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Don, the signal you are recording should not be above 0dB, as this will lead to distortion. The problem with recording with a high gain is that the recording can't be fixed afterwards. If you record with a lower gain, you can always add distortion and process the signal to your liking 😉

yup but stuff like bias amp 2 and fx are sounding pretty damn good. and costs a hell of a lot less then buying a ton of amps. plus you can change the sound after the fact if you record it dry.. dont diss amp sims they can be very good these days! if you want to go back and change the sound you cant. as the sound id stuck based on what amp you used. i just like the flexiablity of being able to change it then actually you have MORE options to "make your own sound" then you would with just one guitar amp recording. not to mention all the crap you have to lug around if your recoding somewhere else ..your guitar. your amp your petals etc. lots of stuff to lug around! i think discouraging people from using software amps is not very good i got some pretty damn realistic results from software amps of late. and there is proof online that they can sound just as good and with bias amp 2 you can actually make your OWN amp and custimize your own sound further!

"Nothing that sounds more real than a real amplifier." - If you rephrase that sentence you see why this is a redundant statement: "Nothing sounds more like a real amplifier than a real amplifier". "Modeling software ... is created by people that you have never met they're all created according to their tastes..." - That is also true for real amplifiers.

I like these, but to compare a well set-up strat to a less than ideal set-up tele seems a bit unfair. The two are so different sounding even when both perfectly set-up. Would have been a little more accurate to use the same guitar and just mess with the bridge or tuning.

Having that whole rack of processors and criticizing modeling software seems a little bit contradictory, as the modeling software are no lesser part of the "whole instrument together from guitar to the amp".

Why hating so much on software amplifiers? We are in 2020 dude, amazing options like STL tonehub, neural ,Axe Fx, Kemper etc that will sound 10 times better than that 100w amp with oversaturated compression
