Dear Americans, Could you explain what you pay with checks? Is it a common way to pay rent? Do you deliver check in envelope in person or by mail? What else can you pay with check? Gas? Electricity? Very courious friend from Europe Many hugs to you all!

I wouldn't say it's as common anymore in this day and age, but my landlord is a little old lady so she prefers checks :) I believe companies still take checks - mostly from older citizens who are used to that sort of exchange. No one really does it anymore though. I still get a lot of my salary through checks too!

I agree with Rachel. Writing a check is just an option for those (mainly the elderly) who are more comfortable with it. However, in the rental business, it is still very common to write a check. I think it’s because, at times, the landlord is an individual/ family or a small rental property company. Usually if it’s a big company or big apartment complex, it can be done digitally. Other areas of industries that prefer or only take cash/checks are repair services like electricians, plumbers, carpenters, etc. Each time I needed to get something done at my house, the company preferred checks and would give us a discount. It is because the job is in the thousands of dollars and the credit card fee is high. These individuals are usually small businesses so the cost is a lot for them.

Funny comment: writing checks mainly for the “elderly”. Actually, small town living includes writing checks at the farmers market, the car repair, and the local bakery, as well as rent and sending donations to organizations through the mail.
