Definitely going to be using this. Thanks for posting. I restore quite a lot of old photos and what I did for this was make actions that create a duplicate layer with highlights, whites, blacks and exposure adjustments that simulate -.5, -1 or -2 stops of light with a mask that I'd paint in at 10% opacity. Sometimes it's quite surprising how much detail can be recovered that way.

Thank you for this technique. I am however looking for a way to do that for (2) very colorful Buddhist warrior statues from Thailand. The top of the heads, arms etc are a bit blown out. Most colors and textures are available in the picture. I tried the technique without text input. I wouldn't know what text to use. But I get variations of complete landscapes all over my image. Any tips to give me? Channels?

Use Blend-If!

You can load the RGB channel as a mask- Cmd (or Ctrl) and click on it in the Channels panel, OR press Cmd (Ctrl), Alt, and 2 to load it as a selection. Then create a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer and you will have a mask that applies this adjustment based on the luminance values.

You can use frequency separation and then brush the skin colour to areas where the texture and colour are blown out. It works but always try to keep as much detail as possible.
