Lecture: Musical Memorials
Over the last several decades, music has become an integral part of Holocaust memorialization. Innumerable works have been commissioned and co-opted for inclusion in Holocaust events. How ethical are the motives behind their use, and what responsibilities do presenters and artists have in their choices: do they have carte blanche when it comes to manipulating the emotions of their audiences, or in revising or inventing Holocaust narratives? Is music an appropriate vehicle? Much of the music written during the Hitler years, particularly the works of the Terezín composers, is reserved for and even ghettoized by memorial programs. These composers could never have imagined the associations their works now elicit, or the context of their performance. These issues will be discussed from a programmer's point of view.
