Cheers Steve. Always the same when you change vehicles! Takes a second or two to adjust....... That driver was lucky to have gone so long without a tow in, and lucky to get a pleasant, capable and understanding recovery driver for his first experience. My first time was aged 18 in 1990, 3 or 4 months into the job driving a 7.5t AWD. N/S front hub disintegrated near Wareham on a Friday morning. (I was, and still am, Norfolk based). I was recovered by 2 bloody lovely Dorset natives and towed to the local dealership at Blandford Forum on the back of an ancient Bedford KM wrecker. Plenty more recoveries over the ensuing 28 years in the, er, "game(!)", and every time the guys were awesome. Despite the disappointment of breaking down, waiting for recovery, etc, I always reckoned anything less than an hour from arrival of the recovery truck to departure was pretty damn quick, but time is irrelevant when safety is paramount....... I also got to ride in some pretty awesome recovery trucks, quite a few of them LHD, and was full of respect and admiration for the drivers: Driving a "normal" artic requires plenty of skill and awareness, but only has one pivot point, and is usually only around 55-60ft long....... Two pivot points and 90ish ft....?! Respect. Thanks. Keep them coming 👍👍

What a smashing new DAF that is, very smart!! (in my opinion, at least) Daf is one of the least aesthetic trucks but the best for all-around work. With regards to towing, I have no idea what they're like, but the DAF CF dustcarts we have at work are really well built, sturdy, durable and have just enough of the features you need, with none of the additional buttons that create a minefield of what button does which job. I do like Boniface engineering bodies. They seem to engineer their work very well. Even having the airlines on the offside (for a UK truck at least) makes things much easier. however, in this case, may have made your job a little trickier. As I've always said, slow and steady wins the race. No good sprinting along only to stop half way. It's a marathon, not a sprint. Great vlog as always Steve!! Safe travels Mr!!

I seem to remember reading something (from many decades ago) about recovery trucks not being allowed to tow two vehicles except moving them out of the way in an emergency, tractor and loaded trailer counting as two vehicles while tractor and empty trailer counting as one vehicle. It was only road locomotives as used by showmen who could tow more than one trailer/vehicle. It has been great seeing you towing something so long 'snaking along behind' as you say. Quite a skill to not bump curbs and sign posts with that length in tow. Really enjoying the videos, thank you.

Hi Jamie thanks for watching, some recovery companies still work 24hours on call rotas so best check the company you intend to work for the hours they expect you to be available for . Ayo mate in cases like this, if the engine is able to run, just let it idle while you're towing it, if it runs, the gearbox oilpump will be driven and theres no need to remove the halfshafts or the propshaft. Working in a mercedes dealer ship in germany and we do it like that, if the engine isnt able to run we just disconnect the propshaft, since some trucks have a diff lock option and if you remove both half shafts, the fork that slides into place to lock both wheels will fall off basically inside the housing. dunno if thats helpfull for you just wanted to mention

@HeavyRecoverywithSteve
@HeavyRecoverywithSteve Жыл бұрын
Hi Ollie, you can remove either half shaft to discount the drive to gearbox . But its easier to remove and refit the half shaft without the diff lock mechanism that locates on the half shaft spline, as the teeth need to be lined up for the half shaft to pass the diff lock collar to the diff. Hope that makes sense Cheers.

Why don't they use the American style leaver controls on the UK builds? The button control panel you have seems to take up a lot of space in comparison to the US tow trucks featured on YT (Ron Pratt/ Plaza etc). It also seems like an 'All or nothing' way of controlling the hydraulic movements with no ability to feather the action.

Hi thanks for watching and commenting , not sure on these buttons either, i do prefer levers as well as back up for the remotes.

I was wondering why you took that shaft out of that wheel so if anyone could explain that would be amazing!
@HeavyRecoverywithSteve
@HeavyRecoverywithSteve Жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, by removing the half shaft you are disconnecting the drive to gearbox , saving and potential damage to gearbox whilst being towed.

Not too knowledgeable on heavy recovery towing, so just a question, you remove the half shaft or prop shaft to disconnect the transmission, why can you not just leave the vehicle in neutral gear?
@Dood_
@Dood_ Жыл бұрын
Leaving the transmission in neutral disconnects the transmission from the engine, but not from the wheels, so when towing wheels turn and transmission turns.

That's what I started to wonder. Some fab shop with a laythe and milling machine could easily make a cover and I suspect it won't break the bank

If you made a cardboard template of the axle hub, i’m sure almost any engineering shop could cut you a plate out of some aluminium or steel.

Those american rear lights dosent have the E marks on them probably, but they are still approved in the UK? They cost a fraction of the price of the european cluster ones and are ten times better, have been hauling trailers in america for ten years and never had problems with lights on them. Wish they could sell them in europe also.
