I broke down in an 18t rigid on an dua carriageway A road in Maidstone recently. Sat there stationary awaiting recovery for just shy of 6 hours. Amazed at how many idiots ignore the cones and hazards and get right up close before a sudden lane change into other traffic. Also amazed not a single police officer stopped to question what a lorry was doing stopped like that 🤷♂️

You guys could have good use of a Traffic Management Application or TMA for short mounted on a truck and it responds together with the recovery vehicle and parks behind you or whatever incident it attends and keeping the workers safe. Sweden uses them and it’s great many drivers slow down and move over for the traffic management application. including me I always keep my speed low when passing workers on the road.

We don't have that gush of air here in OZ when the red line is attached or removed as the emergency air supply goes through the park brake in the cab on Australian trucks. When the cab park brake is applied, this also cuts the supply to the red airline which obviously also applies the trailer brakes. UK tractor units, on the other hand, only apply the trailer brakes via the foot brake as the red emergency air line is always active. Also, no brake buttons anywhere on Aussie trailers which means the only way to release the trailer brakes is with the airlines attached and the park brake released in the cab.
@86SVA2 жыл бұрын
Interesting. Some of our trucks pressurise the yellow line with the handbrake so when parked the trailer brakes are applied however some dont so you're effectively parked with the trailer brakes off which I feel is a bit stupid seeing as you could be parked on a steep hill with 35t or there abouts pushing against the unit.

Something I have often thought. Granted these are designed to cope with heavy loads and huge torque but when there has been the ability to fully lock or disengage diffs for many years with offroad vehicles, you would think this design could be applied to the diffs on these. Maybe even a pneumatic actuator that disengages the diff/half shaft for recovery?
@thesteelrodent17962 жыл бұрын
@@andrewlittle4563 there have been designs with a form of quick disconnect on the driveshaft, but the problem is things like that creates a point of weakness. The way a differential is designed you cannot have axles that are both connected and not connected. If you put in any kind of clutch you lose strength and create a power loss between the drive shaft and the wheels. There's also the issue that most trucks don't ever need to get towed, so implementing any kind "just in case" solution just adds extra cost and weight for no practical benefit.

@studiosoftmorecambe68792 жыл бұрын
Most people don't slow down because they have seen you and pulled out in plenty of time so they are only overtaking a stationery object, leaving plenty of room for you. The problems arise from the dopey git who doesn't see a huge truck parked there because it isn't on their Sat Nav display. When it comes to visual clues, many people only respond the things 20ft in front of them.
@beeble20032 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Having said that, I'm surprised that such a tall trailer didn't have an extra light cluster up at the top for increased visibility. Obviously, it's always every driver's responsibility to look out ahead of them but the small number of lights on that trailer makes that job a tiny bit harder. When you make thousands of people's job a tiny bit harder, a couple of them will fail.
