I had a chance 35 years ago to use an antique logging truck loader that was cable operated. I had to "throw" the bucket at the log or logs to reach them and scoop them up. That was a trip to try to master. The hydraulic loader was way more easier. Your grapple hook reminded me of that blip of my existence.

That is nice size cherry, I would love to get some that size. Black cherry where I live in Texas rarely gets that big due to the dry summers and falls. Only have one that size on 22 acres.

It still looks like work picking up those logs, even now that you have the right toys, and these are so "small". It was pretty amazing watching you do it earlier using determination and not much else, but I suspect you're happy to be past that. Having the right tools is nice.

We just had a massive black cherry taken down. It was a three stem, but the middle stem had died and rotted quite a while ago. The tree was starting to do poorly and pretty close to some power lines so we bit the bullet. If the middle hadn't been rotted out of the base, I'd have found a way to bring it up to you. The base of the tree was 4 foot across the three stems, and 30 inches in the other dimension. Maybe 6 foot up before the three stems really separated. I was so sad that the rot ate out almost the entire middle of the base. I still ended up with 6-7 good 10 foot saw logs ranging from 24 inches in diameter to 14 inches at the smallest from the remaining two stems.

Cherry only gets so big? Wild cherry down here can get 30+ inches(Northern IL). Matt, that cherry with the crook in it... you've got to learn to work with natural shapes and leave that in and figure out how to use that in your work. There are many places wonky lumber can be used and add significant appeal to a piece. A crooked stringer for a table base, putting wonky stuff together to make a cool table top. Chair parts that use follow the shape of the grain. Your imagination is your only limit. Are you really wearing a mask outside? Really?
