Instead of recycling the old blade, consider finding a hobbyist knife maker - that is good steel. I just finished a knife made from a smaller blade and it came out fine.

Good show today. Glad to see you taking your time and enjoying your self. Good tangents as well. I realize the house project and all the pieces that fall under that umbrella take precedence, but the log sawing videos are very enjoyable. Thanks and take care. Hope all your family are doing well.

Hi Matthew, Thank you, Thank you for being my spare time ( I have lots of it, I am 80 years old/young) entertainer. Your videos are always very interesting to watch. I have been following you for years and each week I can't wait to see what's next. I especially have enjoyed the remodel series that I think might be ending soon. Can you say, if you know when, or what, the next series you are planning on doing is going to be about? Thank you again for all the time and "GREAT EFFORT" that you put into your love affair with wood. Keep up the great work!

Another interesting log slicing session with Matt. Fantastic looking slabs in this one. I hate to say though that the extra camera motion in this episode made me a little nauseous. Still, I'm looking forward to the next installment, hopefully with just a little less camera movement.

I’m wondering how you approach your own projects from your inventory. Do you have ideas of what you want to build while you’re making your slabs? or do you later think of your slab inventory and decide to build something? Or do you have a project in mind and try to decide which slabs will best suit your design needs? Mix of all of this?

Matt, said $12/board foot. Middle slabs run about 90bf (~$1080). If you're local... But, then you have to add in a freight charge for it to be transported to your location.

I've watched you "slabbing" since you originally built thi bandsaw milling mahine. You've built a barn / shop and remodelled your house. It's time for you to get this away from the driveway apron into a dedicated open sided shed so you can slab away anytime of year or weather and to protect this beautiful machine. Future project?

My town just dropped a big silver maple in my front yard. I arranged to keep the bolt section and the 2 main limbs. The saw guy said “ I’ve been doing this 30 years. You are the first homeowner who wanted the trunk”. LOL The mill here locally suggested letting it sit for 2 years to spalt. Would you agree?

2 questions: if its that wet before you cut it, why is it necessary to leave them out in the field? can they be cut right away? Also, after you cut that log that had 32% wetness, how long till it can be used? Thx.
@nfix09
@nfix09 11 сағат бұрын
this log is silver maple, the color variation within the wood develops by letting it sit around, if he had cut the log right away the color would have been limited to white and light brown. also Matt is busy, so alot of his logs are waiting for him to find the time more than it being strictly necessary to leave them out in the field.

Dry time is usually about 1-2 years per inch thickness, but if you need it sooner, it can be kiln dried in 2-6 weeks depending on thickness. But, using a kiln can be $$$$.

Always enjoy the log videos. I appreciate the work that goes into it and at times the addition of a camera that can move is helpful, i just wish the moves were more intentional, either to move the view to something informative or interesting, vs moving to move. I honestly feel relief at the static shots. The old formula had some great zen and chill qualities paired with anticipation that the new formula doesn't. When your looking at grain or showing a process, the moving camera is fantastic. Brad does a great job but I noticed today what the movement was doing to my viewing experience so thought to share constructively. I'd like to see less moves, more rest after each move, and slightly softer edits to get back that sweet zen feel. That said, these could become something entirely new and different with a new approach. A lot of stuff in today's video that didn't resonate in my expected long form experience fits well into short format, so maybe there's a place for both. Keep up the experimentation and great videos. Thanks Matt and Brad.
