Just to say thank you so much for your tips, you've just saved 10 years of family photos and documents. I had it all backed up on a 1TB SSD so I could restore it on a new build. It seems I had some shorts on the tower front USB sockets causing my new build to shut off when I plugged the backup drive in, probably the cause of the corrupt drive. With my heart sunk to my feet thinking I'd lost everything. I stumbled across your video looking for a resolution. The CHKDSK worked for me, it took about 40 mins to scan, thankfully a window popped up after the scan revealing all my backups. Thanks once again much appreciated.

You could mention that chkdsk take hours to complete and that it might disconnect the drive and also that cancelling it can be risky at a certain stage? Mention that a backup is a good suggestion and the various stages where its risky to cancel. Also that/f ONLY can also be run just to make sure.

My case is completely different I added Stable diffusion models files in Hard drive but after all copied when I tried to access that hard drive then I started to get error. So for test I made new folder and same files paste in it. and I got same error. So I am able to access hard drive but I wont able to access those particular folder where I added those stable diffusion model files. it occupy space but not allowing me to access

Itried the chkdsk but it says windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected. What will I do now?

My comment is unrelated but can't find a video about the subject. Help please. I very recently bought a Toshiba canvio advance external HD. In the past few days it has started acting strange. when I playback videos, the image freezes, but the voice keeps going, and then the image fast forwards to catch up with the voice, then the cycle starts over again. It kind of worked but when I now go to click on Users folder [it is an external hard drive from old computer] to access files it is slightly blanked out and now says "_IsUser.dll". What should I do? P.S. Everything worked fine prior to me forgetting to eject USB mass storage device.

First i did the /r and /f the disk came back with the size of how much it stores but when i try to access the folder that i have most of the big files they are not there :P im now doing all the /r /f /x hope to fix it :P

I know it's late but elevated mode means "Run as Admin". Run the CMD as admin and it should be fine.

If this fails, use Disk Management to check the drive status; if it shows as RAW or unallocated, you may need to format it after recovering data. To format via Command Prompt, use DiskPart commands: select disk, clean, create partition primary, and format fs=ntfs quick.
