On your top pulley pin, drill a 3/16” hole thru the center of your pin to the center. Then drill a 1/8” hole across the center pin. Tap a 1/4” thread & place a zero fitting in the thread. Then grease once a week, pulley & pin last a lot longer.Also reduces friction when wrenching. I have done this for over 40 years, good luck 👍

Grease everything up, apart from making sure that all the moving parts lasting longer, it saves a load of friction, getting more winch power to the object and a smoother pull. Another tip I’d suggest is winding the plasma rope onto the drum in an overlapping cross-cross fashion. Unlike steel rope, the plasma rope can get ‘locked-in’ under load if you wind it neat like you did, or would do with steel wire. Under load, because it’s much more flexible, it can get pulled down between the wraps and can jam, making it hard to run-off by hand on free-spool. Criss-crossing it onto the drum helps to spread the load on the rope, and stop it jamming in. 👍🏻 After using plasma for a few years now, I’d much prefer it to steel wire rope. Mind you, I don’t do as much heavy winching as you do, so you may not like it as much. Although it’s breaking strength can be equal or greater than steel wire, it’s way more fragile than steel if your winching over rocks and gravels, so it’s a good idea to have some 2x4 handy to give the plasma rope a smoother ride over rough terrain (winching over a berm for example to recover from a deep ditch or a gully). Best of luck with it, hope you like it, it’s way more easy to handle than steel, and you don’t get ripped up from fishhooks 🇷🇴🇬🇧👍🏻

do you have any velcro closed cable shield for your new synthetic cable.. so you can protect the last few feet against sharp edges under trucks.. even a few feet of firehose you could have an upholstery shop split open and add velcro.. or just pull the hook and slip a 2' piece up the end of the rope..

Since you had to change the pulley to be compatible with the rope. Will any of your snatch blocks need to have there pulleys changed as well? What is the difference of strength between the rope and the cable? How many feet of rope did you spool on to the winch??

Nice one Eric I'm just getting a new with rope. All my other ones are cable. We not got as many good place is to go over here in UK and we call it green laneing most off the trucks you boys over will not fit down are lanes but we do have some fun and we do have to ues are winch is some times. But we do night laneing over here and u don't want to go out in to some of the places we go at night with out a winch. U all have fun at the weekend. It makes me a bit mad at moment that I no u are all going for a play this weekend. Both off my trucks are off the road at moment and both off my mates are off the road as well we. Do play hard some time we have one with blown engine other one with blown gearbox. And my 2 well we won't go there. U all have from Andy in UK

Keep us informed on how you feel about that new winch cable my friend. .... we are all interested in it's performance when compared to the steel cable.

We tested switching the aircraft cargo winch to synthetic to save weight, (on a 585,000lb airplane), and they ended up wearing out twice as fast as the stainless steel cable.

Are your snatch blocks big enough for that new rope?
@jonstarnes79055 жыл бұрын
That red rope sheath you put on the drum should be at the hook end of the cable. On a typical winch setup it's meant for two things, to cover the rope as the last wrap to keep it out of the sun. The second thing is to place it in line on top of rocks and such as to not score your rope when winching. You're wasting it keeping it on the drum like that.
@offroadrecoveryteam5 жыл бұрын
There is a black one on the hook end, the red one is to tell you your almost at the end.

@@offroadrecoveryteam gotcha. Sorry I didn't catch that. Good deal then.

Snatch block you used for wire cable will not work well with synthetic line. Be sure you keep a cover on your winch. UV light is the biggest enemy and breaks down the fibers. Better to run a thimble on than a hook.

I have a vr10000 lb Warn winch. I normally go on logging roads and bush trail as well as mud. Would you recomend wire or synthetic on a front mount winch?
@offroadrecoveryteam5 жыл бұрын
I have been a steel cable guy for durability, but I like the way synthetic spools up on the drum, and it has held up good on the wrecker so far.

What is the weight difference between the steel cable and the rope
@Derek_00Mustang836 жыл бұрын
Brad Balladarsch exactly what i was going to ask. On my atv for 50 foot it was about 4-5 pounds difference
@sandmansandman68196 жыл бұрын
rope is lighter for people trying to save weight does not whip as bad when it breaks. but if dragged across rocks or other objects it does weaken the rope.
@consaka16 жыл бұрын
On my 12,000 lb winch the steel cable is pretty darn heavy at 100 feet. I have two coiled up in the garage. The rope is so light it basically weighs nothing by comparison. I could take some weight measurements but I bet it would take 800 feet or more of 3/8 amsteel to equal that 100 feet of steel cable.

@bouchee20076 жыл бұрын
amsteel is stronger and has no elastic snap when it breaks, only down side, it can chafe easier
@consaka16 жыл бұрын
Its better than a cable. It is stronger than the same size cable, It is lighter to carry around than a cable, You dont get splinters from it like you can from a cable. It doesn't have memory like a cable. It doesn't stretch like a cable. It is hella safer than a cable. Did I mention it floats? Now the downside is that it is more expensive than a cable and it will wear out a bit faster than a cable. It wears out faster because it is made up of thousands of ridiculously small fibers that can chaff pretty easy.
