I watched the Dam Busters documentary they made, and it was superb. Arnie and Buffalo were the right ones to pull this off. Barnes Wallace was a genius, he designed the Lancaster bomber and also came up with this idea, along with a lot of other great engineering. Watch the movie 'Dam Busters' if you're interested - you'll note that George Lucas pulled on the flight dialogue from Dam Busters for some of the dialogue in the Death Star battle in the original Star Wars.

@@jasonchao343 the movie "The Dam Busters" (1955 - it's black & white) you'd have to search in your area to see where its showing. In my area (eastern US) Turner Classic Movies claims to have it, and I'm also seeing it on Amazon Prime. As for the documentary, I think there may have been more than one part, and I think in the US it showed on the National Geographic channel and maybe PBS/NOVA. It was called "Dambusters: Building the Bouncing Bomb" and the date was 2011. If you're not in the US, I think the original was a BBC production and I'm not sure where you'd find it in the UK or elsewhere.

The commanding officer on Britain's first ever special forces mission was also Canadian. He was part of the now defunct lineage company who blew up a hydro electric dam in Northern Norway.

Spoiler Alert.... its 13 years later and Bufalo is still flying C-46's.. Musta found them pesky exhaust manifolds after all. They might only have one C-46 now though. In 2015 C-GTXW (seen here 29:09 ) crashed and was written off. Kind of sad.

@@robslade2571 Nope, the C46 specifically was build to survive war. It was a low altitude crash, the plane was a write off, but the crew got out no problem

The DC3 in WW2 was called C-47. The DC 4 more looks like a Lancaster to me.

Well done! Minor Correction to the Title: That was a DC-4 , not a C-47 which is the U.S. military designation for the Douglas DC-3, a two engine airplane and the predecessor to the DC-4. The DC-4 is a four engine aircraft, military designations C-54 or R5D.

They jad lights on the bottom of the plane, and if they matched up( like two lasers focused to a single) it would mean they were at the right height to drop the bomb. Now they just had to match the right speed and distance from the dam

It should be an easy thing to keep a drum spinning when you have air rushing past at 200MPH or more, just make the air flow over the side that you want to keep spinning and shield the retreating side.

@@thedave7760 That would be like flying with an un-feathered prop on a dead engine- it would create massive drag. And- the rpm of the bomb would depend on your speed, head wind, etc.- I don't think they wanted that.

The flights are VERY real. The issues that they have with the planes for the most part are fabricated. They do over dramatize the mostly minor issues they encounter though The Drama that they have on the ground is 100% fabricated. Whats weird is they make a HUGE deal about a faulty sensor. BUT laugh off a near CFIT incident. lol

To waste so many hours cleaning planes and refueling them, plus the risks that can come from freezing! ... but everyone runs their business as he knows best ...

@@leatheraccessories646 From what I understand (from watching Mikey Mcbrian's youtube channel) they do store the electras and the king airs in the hangar. basically if it has a turbine its housed. BUT the old radials are tough enough to keep outdoors. Also a little fact. Keeping a plane outside does not hurt it. the areas that really matter have rubber de-icing boots that pump up and flex making the ice fall off. its just a matter of shoveling off the wings and keeping the prop clear. for the most part planes only ice up while below the clouds BUT these planes spend most of their time below the clouds making short 45 min flights. That is why they made a show about it. its dangerous.

@@scottcol23 I know what you're saying, but I'm thinking about wasting every cold winter day, wasting hours cleaning the plane seems like too much time to me! ... in the 5 hours lost with the thawing of the plane, a flight could be made if the plane was kept in the hangar and was ready to fly in the first hour ... this is also about profitability, so many people engaged in cleaning work? so much energy consumed! but as I said, everyone runs their business better
