Hello, Jan - I'am happy you make this video This may people understand what was the surprise, the emotion to receive this computer in 80ties. Now tehnogy is everywhere and nothing seems to be surprising....in 80ties C64 was really somethings comming from science fiction:-) I'm in IT carrier for 25 Years now because of ZX81, C64 and TRS80 :-) Thanks for this vid :-) carry on

i got my c64 on christmas 84 (end of 84) i think, and although other xmas were good too (1980 i had an intellivision) the c64 was the one i was most excited about, and remember for months going into dixons store to play with the 64 they had on demo, and typing and reading basic programming books, i loved that, my brother moved to the usa in early 88 so i was given his amiga 500 so moved onto that, so i was spoilt and moved on pretty quick, but most of my memories are the c64, and buying games in our local independant store, whilst they played theme from top-gun it seems most of the time, and certainly always buying the 1.99 mastertronic games and then saving up for the 7.99 premium games too, and thus making my wait for my moped i was saving for that much longer

Love that passion to recreate the Christmas 1987 setup :) Got my first computer in 1986, it was a Salora Manager, known also as a Vtech Laser 2001. Later in 1989 I got the Commodore 64c so I was a bit late in that game but played with friends C-64 even before 1986. Sadly I sold the C-64 in 1991 but I still have the first computer, Salora Manager in working condition.

I was fortunate enough to keep my original C64 from 1984, and it still works great today. But I'll check out the future-proofing episode to see what I can do for it. I bought a friend's C64 in the early 90's and have a 1541 drive still too. Unfortunately my drive is too far gone so I got a 1571 to try. It works, but the magnetic media on the 5¼" floppies delaminated and clog up the head whenever the drive is in use :( I absolutely love this channel Jan - keep up the great work!
@JanBeta7 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! The most important future proofing measure is probably to replace the power supply with something more decent and/or use some sort of overvoltage protection.

Such good memories... sitting at the computer reading a book :) everyone's scenario I guess. Can You imagine that today? A kid with a tablet reading a book on how to use it, hehe... a book back then = the analog version of the internet! I still have my original C64C, datassette, 1541-II and books of course :) back from the day when I got my very first computer. I do not have the monitor (or rather TV) from the original setup. This will be a cool series - wish You luck in fully recreating Your '87 C64 setup.

Jan, at the moment I saw that you sprayed window cleaner directly to the keyboard I thught, well... he must know something I don't and then you KB was not working completely. When I was 17 I did maintenance (cleaning) to computers and the first thing the guy in charge told me "if you spray the keyboards I will kill you", because then we had to spend an hour wiping the product off the contacts. Cool video as always :-)
@JanBeta7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the window cleaner definitely wasn't a very bright idea. I think that's why the keyboard didn't work. I usually spray the cloth I clean it with (which obviously works a bit better)... Thanks for sharing the story. ;)
@tjlazer717 жыл бұрын
What I found works best is a large brush and some cleaner sprayed on the brush and then brush the keyboard (after removing keys like you did), gets it nice and clean. I usually use Simple Green.

Great video, I always find your videos quite relaxing, as a retro gamer myself (but not one that's electronics savvy) I find them very interesting to watch. My first ever computer was my beloved C64 back in the late 80's, it was a second hand silver label one which I still have somewhere which was bought for me by my parents for Xmas, but it stopped working long ago. The guy that owned it was clearly a programmer, as the machine came with lots of programming books, and allsorts of games he had made himself and saved to cassettes. I absolutely loved playing games on it, and it holds sooo many great happy memories for me :) Fast forward to these days, and I now own three C64's (one of which is a C64G that I got from ebay some years ago, which has a little yellowing and could probably benefit from a bath :-D but still works beautifully) I also own a C64GS, bought second hand, no box, but still cool to own one. I have an Amiga A1200, and an A500, and many other retro consoles....it's all good fun. Back in the day, I was a founding member of the UK Amiga scene group Nerve Axis, who went on to do some amazing demos in their later days long after me and my friends had nothing to do with them...pretty amazing stuff :) You were right though, who the hell writes on a Commodore 64? Have some bloody respect for a legendary computer will you :-D Keep up the great work, sometimes I wonder how you have the patience with some of the taks you carry out...it would try mine that's for sure...well done :-D

Nice job. My aunt worked at Commodore plant here in USA in Bristol VA area they did soldering rework on assembly line. The building is now a furniture store. The Commodore sign was faintly visible for years. I remember the VIC 20 from school. They were hard to get hands on. Like they wanted to keep me away from them for some reason. I finally got my first VIC a few years ago. 25 years after seeing them in school. I mostly had learned on TI-99/4A and Apple II . Enjoyed getting the latest magazines and keying in the programs every month.

No, I was talking about the other side of the keyboard, to get to that membrane thing. My bad, I did not make that clear. ;) I've taken keys off computers quite a few times. I used to use a screwdriver as well, but as you know, it's a bit risky. Got a puller like yours a month or so ago. Wonderful tool. Should have gotten that years ago.. :)

Ah, I see! Now I also remember watching your A1200 keyboard conversion video. ;) The backside is the easier part really (as long as you don't take the little plungers out)... just a bunch of screws really. Hi Jan B, I love this new mini-series about your childhood C64 setup! I am doing the same basically right now, only I am building the setup I never had, an Amiga 500 :). Quick tip: Instead of soaking, try spraying the case with Cif window cleaner. For me it starts to get the dirt off even while I am still spraying it. Great channel, BTW And a question, do you usually discharge the caps before starting to replace them/soldering, or only in PSUs? Thanks!
@JanBeta7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I'll have to try different methods on the cases in the future. Thanks for the window cleaner tip. I usually only discharge caps that have a high voltage rating (like for example 400V ones in a switching power supply) so I don't get shocked or fry something on the board. Of course it wouldn't hurt to discharge all of them but I've never ran into trouble with smaller caps like the ones in the C64.

Does it make sense to replace the caps in the RF modulator if you never use the TV output? Or will it damage something else on the motherboard if they should ever go bad because they weren't replaced?
@JanBeta7 жыл бұрын
It makes sense if you are using the composite out because that signal is generated in the modulator circuitry (as far as I know at least). It doesn't matter for the S-video signal though. I don't think anything would be damaged if the caps go slightly leaky (it's very unlikely they go so bad that they short out... which would do some damage to the VIC-II I guess).

Would the C64 work fine if you had left the RF modulator off completely? (minus outputting an RF signal, of course) If not, are you aware of an easy (or not so easy) way to remove the RF modulator and have a working system?
@JanBeta7 жыл бұрын
I think you'd have to at least put some little circuitry in to replace the RF modulator because parts of the video output are generated there. I'm in the process of looking into this and there might be a video coming some time.
@arlomoran20737 жыл бұрын
Very enjoyable video as always from Jan! I wonder whether just removing those RF modules is okay since they're painful to restore and as a bonus less RF interference in the case?
@JanBeta7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Unfortunately you have to build a little replacement circuit for the RF modulator if you want to remove it as the signals are passed through there as far as I know (I'm about to learn the details and might make a video some time in the future).

I just saw a picture of a C64 with an odd looking Commodore logo. It doesn’t have the normal rainbow on the left, but has the 64 by the power LED. I hadn’t seen this before. Is this some special version C64 breadbox? Do you know the story on this?
@JanBeta5 жыл бұрын
That‘s probably an early "silver label" model. When the C64 was released in 1982, the logos looked like that. You can also see that version in the picture on the boxes the C64 came in (even the box my ALDI C64 came in had a picture of the old model on it).

I also noticed some 1541 drives have silver logo badge versus the rainbow color. Is that same thing? Silver meaning the earlier version of the 1541 drive?

The caps in the C64s are usually still within spec. They rarely start leaking (at least from my experience). They are drifting rather slowly and recapping often makes the video output better but they rarely fully fail. Don't worry too much. Still a good idea to put the C64 to use again, though. ;)

As an alternative to that key lifting tool: When i fixed the keyboards of my Amigas, i use bent pliers from underneath the keys (lifted at the top inside the plastic key itself) to lift the keys from the board, like this one: images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61Jqz4-NH-L._SX355_.jpg The spring models (A4000) worked fine, but the ones with a rubber cap (A2000) inside one have to be careful with.
