Aenima is the pinnicle for both tone and overall production. I love the shades of that evil sounding chorus-type flavor, the chirpy break up of the distortion, the razor sounding crunch of the rhythm tone, even the big delay of the pick scrapes. I've always identified that song's tone as a classic Rectifier tone - the signature near-abrasive Presence, for example, reminiscent of a lot of famous uses of that amp around that time (e.g., in Limp Biscuit). Having had some version of a Recto in the stable for 13 years now, I know it can definitely nail to a "T" that particular tone. Side note: the best Adam Jones guitar tone for me is on the track Jambi. Truly one of the greatest modern tones to date and I think the product of a uniquely inspired spark of creative chemistry between Jones and Baresi... Cheers!

Should've gone with some pre EQ that boosts the high mid and high. The song intro sounds ALMOST like it's been recorded with single coils. I think the Boss EQ does that. Your tone has too much modern tightness and too much mid presence instead of a bit more contour. Also, the Marshall is 100% stock, per his tech (check the dunlop video). This was a tricky one though ;)
@evitative4625 жыл бұрын
The Marshall is a super bass that has been modded to super lead specs. So it has a shared cathode instead of a split cathode and the super bass tonestack. This is per information from Friedman who modded it.
@rprides10074 жыл бұрын

Adams guitar sound is based on the Marshall Base head, or vintage Marshall tube amp can get close to recreating that sound. Listen to their 1992 album live which he plays through one amp, and you will see his tone has not changed much, just been added to. The Vh4 blue stereo amp is the perfect add to his sound. And he has hardly changed his live set up from the aenima tour. He switch out the messa for another Vh4 standard. The key with his sound is the stereo setup, playing 3 amps at once. Lastly his Silver burst les Paul has a special sound that he says keeps him playing them. The tone you have created is very dry. And JCM Marshall apps do go very dry. His base head is very hard to get and modify, but trying the vintage tube amps like the Marshall 1974x hardwired 18W tube amp turned right up to vol 10 will get you close with that wet vintage Marshall sound. Then get a Vh4 amp with a quad and play them in stereo you will see what i mean.

If you said this, I apologize for missing it... I have a guitar mag interview with Adam from the late ‘90s or early ‘00s where he says that (at least part of) the Marshall mod is jumpering the clean and crunch channels so he can dial a bit of clean into the overall tone. I believe that amp has a separate tone stack for the 2 channels. So that may be “not as much gain as I’m using here” aspect comes in. Just an idea. Having said all that, your recreation is right on. A tiny bit of a clean channel might have a subtle effect but you nailed it.

Great video! I've been listening to the Aenima album ever since the release. Saw TOOL live on the Aenima tour. And to this day I still listen to like it's my 1st time. Such an amazing album. When I sit down and really listen carefully to this album I can't help but notice that there is much more going on in Adam Jones's guitar tone. I've always known he has used Diezel amps a lot however I'm hearing something else in his tone on this album and it's almost like a broken up low gain Fuzz coming thru rather than an all out high gain crunch amp tone. If I had to suggest something that I feel sounds close I'd say something like a EHX Metal MUFF. UNDERTOW had that real plexi crunch tone and so did opiate. The Albums that followed Aenima all sound different in tone as well. I'm not claiming your tone was wrong however would love to hear your opinion on this as you know the boys from TOOL love to play with our minds so much it makes me think that maybe there is something none of us know about Adams tone. 🤘👍

Shoutout to Circle Of Tone for doing these types of videos with ridiculous levels of detail. If you love these style videos, check his channel out. Yes, the guy that just got the piss taken out of him by Tony Iommi himself lol.

I know Circle Of Tone tried, and he admitted he failed, to get the Fear Factory tone. I would love to hear a recreation of the tone from Obsolete, especially the track Edge Crusher, which has such a brutal, crushing tone!
