Not gonna lie, pretty jealous! One technique I’ve always loved that Adam uses that u didn’t show, is picking between the bridge and saddles, for that eerie sitar like quality. As he uses in “third eye” although it’s another one that can only be done on a guitar with a LP style bridge/saddle setup...try it using your “extended drop D chord shape, mainly on strings 2, 3 and 4...u’ll hear it

@teargazed if I remember correctly, Paul wanted to go back to guitar, so he had to leave the band. and so, Justin is TOOL's bassist since Aenima ( second album, 1996). today, TOOL's members are irreplaceable in the way of maintaining their "new" sound. I mean, it is quite obvious how grungy "Undertow" and "Opiate" sounds. Since Aenima, it did change to a new direction. if you replaced one of them, same might happen, leading to the loss of what is known as "TOOL" nowadays. P.S: I really am curious about what might could have been with Paul!

You can not mass produce, and make money, off of another persons work without their permission...If KZbinr's weren't getting paid, it wouldn't be such an issue. As they are earning profits using someone else's work, it gets put into copyright territory. A cover band in a dive bar will not have the troubles with copyright unless they actually put out an album and try to sell it. People paying to see a cover band is not the same as that cover band putting out an album available to the public, for profit. KZbinrs are not here to help you out of the kindness of their heart. They are here to make money (Bitcoin, PayPal, Patreon, etc.).That puts them squarely into copyright violations.

On feedback: try changing the distance from the speaker. There is a physical relationship between the length of the string, the harmonic, and the distance from the speaker. You can change from say a second harmonic (string length divided by 2) to a third harmonic (string length divided by 3) by moving the guitar towards the speaker by that length difference. Appropriate EQ helps.

I’ve watched an interview with Maynard and was asked why he stands where he does. I also thought it was because he’s not the band but an equal member. So to sort of stop some from getting the ‘singer is the important one’ thought, they have an open mind. Maynard actually stated that believe it or not, standing in front of Danny’s drums can be damaging to one’s hearing. He started doing that during rehearsals and quickly realized that standing where he does gives him a much clearer representation of what the band is playing than what stage monitors do. So now he hears the band as they are and saves his hearing at the same time. It’s a win win. And of course the added benefit of showcasing the whole band as the frontman as it should be.

These are techniques I've been using for 25 years. But you are way better at explaining it than i am.

Great video. I too share the obsession. What strikes me so much about Adam Jones style of playing is it's so basic and elementary. It's not about crazy fast solos or how many notes you can cram into a measure he uses basic beginner ideas to make these sounds. Furthermore I find that Danny Carey is the eddy van Halen of the band. While Justin often carries the melody that Maynard's voice follows with and Adam while he's the guitarist he is more a combination of what a traditional bass player and drummers role would be in the band. It's so unique.

Want to do something cool with Adam's technique? Do many of these on an acoustic guitar, especially the tremolo picking with hammer-ons. I do it often as my only guitar is an acoustic. Great video!

Awesome video, Adam Jones is an amazing guitarist. Also, how about a Greatest Techniques for Billy Corgan, Matt Bellamy or Alex Lifeson?

I’d love to see you do one of these videos focused on Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, especially from the earlier The Mars Volta days (Tremulant EP, Deloused In the Comatorium, and Frances the Mute).

Just wanna say, that trem solo section at 18:18, which is the solo from Vicarious, is actually played on Bass.

The term you're looking for when you speak of 'the weird rubbing thing that sort of bounces" is BEATING. Two frequencies which are close to one another in pitch (within about 10 cents variation), will manifest what's known as an amplitude beat frequency which is usually heard to be about 2x the difference in cents between the two pitches. In case you weren't aware - there are 100 cents per half step pitch rise
