More than likely 8.5" is the original measurement before it was slashed to spread. HTH.

I would say that it would be better to have some sewing skills before attempting to make this.. especially since it involves pattern drafting. It may be tempting to dive right into making something cool, but you may find yourself very frustrated. I recommend starting with simpler patterns first. For example, making simple skirts and tops before making a dress. Napkins, masks, and scrunchies are what I learned to make first.
