RECREATIONAL PILOT CERTIFICATE: Flying Lesson #17 - 2nd Area Solo
While the weather is good, it makes sense to build up even more solo time. So today, I plan to fly a couple of circuits and then depart for a quick flight up the beautiful north coast of Wollongong. We can't fly too far north though, otherwise we'll enter Sydney airport controlled airspace.
Lets go flying....
ABOUT ME:
I'm a student pilot learning to fly in my spare time. I originally received 30 hours of flying instruction 17 years ago and now I'm back in the cockpit and learning how to fly all over again.
Currently flying out of Wollongong (YWOL), Australia in light sport aircraft such as the Jabiru and Pipestrel alpha with Fly Illawarra:

scottyjames400 thanks mate. Starting to feel pretty confident with the landings now. Time to go up with Bruce again and practice some good crosswind landings. I think that might be the next lesson!

Romeo Juliet Whiskey I find the landings are the most rewarding things when I get them right crosswind landing r fun as well.

scottyjames400 Agreed. I'm just as happy flying an hour of circuits as I am flying around looking at the scenery.

Romeo Juliet Whiskey yeah view is always good to wait till you get cross country endorsement and get to fly a lot further away from your local airport.

I wish it was that cool! I'll let you in on a little secret -I'm a few months behind on the videos so this video was shot back in October! Still loving it - trying to go flying once a week. Planning on tailwheel, aerobatics and cross-country endorsement this year...can't wait!

Tailwheel is so, so good mate! I'm 3 hours into it, flying a de Havilland Chipmunk from 1950. Amazing fun. I don't think I could stomach aerobatics! Cross country is difficult and exhausting...for the first Nav. You'll get better and better as you progress. Although I find I still make errors when I'm put under pressure - thus is CPL training. P.S.: Sure you should have the fuel pump on during the taxi to the hangar? ;) I was always taught to turn the pump off with the landing lights, as you exit the runway.
@RomeoJulietWhiskey
@RomeoJulietWhiskey 7 жыл бұрын
Chipmunk...awesome! I'm sure you would have seen Flightchops videos on the chipmunk. As for the pump, different plane, different instructor, different rules. In my instructors plane, the pump goes off at top of climb and shutting down. The only advantage to doing it earlier I can see is increasing the life of the pump. I'm surprise most people turn the pump off so soon after take-off. What would happen if the mechanical pump had failed?
@AlexanderBrown4068
@AlexanderBrown4068 7 жыл бұрын
I have. It's all that - amazing fun. Well the idea of turning it off at 300 feet is that 300 feet is sufficient height to conduct a forced landing within 30 degrees of the runway. Likewise for turning it on on downwind. Extending the life of the pump is exactly the reason why the planes I fly don't usually have it on all that much.

Hey you should have kept going north and done the harbour scenic, haha. Just wondering when you get your certificate and begin cross country can you combine that with a CTR and CTA endorsement ?? Would love to see some new content in the future, thanks

Hey mate, great video again. I've also have a suggestion about your line up checks, do you think completing them before entering the runway would be better as it would allow you to start rolling quicker? I find it much easier to do it like that so I wouldn't have to worry about other aircraft on base/final haha
@RomeoJulietWhiskey
@RomeoJulietWhiskey 7 жыл бұрын
BRAINYT Yeah good suggestion. I have ask my instructor about that point - he says it only takes 5-10 second it's not going to make much difference. It's more of a habitual thing... line up and do vital checks before take off.

Any tips with dealing with the mental asset of Solos? Every time I think of solo I think, Gonna crash, Gonna crash this'll be bad. So much power in my hands it's not ending well... Also, Do you ever get the feeling in the Jab that when you just lift off your seat drops?
@RomeoJulietWhiskey
@RomeoJulietWhiskey 5 жыл бұрын
I think it's pretty natural to have those doubts..and with more experience that worry will lessen. What helped me was being very confident at dealing with engine failures at any stage in the pattern or out in the training area. You can practise this with your instructor or with a home flight simulator.

@@RomeoJulietWhiskey At this current time, I Bruce has me intro'd to circuits. Stalls and spiral come within the next 8 Hrs or so I'd say. Does the Jabiru feel like the seat drops when you rotate on the stick? Always makes me feel like my guts are dropping lol

What model Jab are you flying here? I see you're mainly cruising around 90kts whereas in others I think you've been as high as 100? Interested to know what the cruise is of the model you're flying.

Joshua Mesilane hey mate, flying a 170 here. Cruise speed would depend on power setting. Also, don't confuse IAS with ground speed as shown in the text in this vid.

Ah yeah, can't quite see the altimeter properly in the video. Watching all of your videos while I'm waiting for my local instructor's new plane to arrive so I can get started. I'll be learning out of a private grass strip about 10 minutes from home which is good, but sounds like it'll make things interesting. I guess this was quite a while ago now, what do you think of the 170?
@RomeoJulietWhiskey
@RomeoJulietWhiskey 6 жыл бұрын
Joshua Mesilane I loved the 170. The central yoke is lacking a little precision but it's a tough little plane that does the job

I notice they're reasonably cheap s/h too, and economical to run. Maybe I'm getting a bit ahead of myself.
