They will teach it all to you. By the numbers. Don't worry about it. Just do your best to relax, but at the same time give 110%. Fear will hold you back.

The nervousness from doing all of this was the fear that you wouldn't succeed. Other than that, there was never anything to be afraid of in terms danger when doing anything. You are surrounded by safety swimmers. On the range, everything is done by the numbers and nobody comes close to pointing a rifle in the wrong direction, there are Corpsmen, etc.

MCRD San Diego sure has change since I went there in 87. I do like that they put some safety bags under the 'stairway to heaven' on the confidence course. I think that is what we called it. I met a guy who fell and broke both his legs. Wait till theese recruites get to Mount Mother, lol. Good times, Semper Fi.

I graduated in '95...noticed they got rid of the water on the pugil sticks course. That used to be called the "Bridge Over Troubled Waters." Looks like they improved the net under the slide for life too. Mouth Mother...oooh yeah! I remember that... also The Grim Reaper, Recon Ridge and The Microwave... MCRD was the best start...SOI was the finish! Good times indeed, Semper Fi!!!

1997, we didn't do the Confidence Course because someone got brutally injured because they didn't have any netting or padding. Plus a dude blew his brains out when he went unq at the range.

You don't wear your own uniform when you go to the pool. You just grab a set that they have there, doesn't matter the size and chances are you are going to be wearing the wrong size boots and you would be lucky if you ended up with a left and a right boot instead of two lefts or two rights, at least that's how it was at PI.

Knowing how to swim is not a great help. The main panic causer is when recruits are learning how to float and get a little water splashed in their face. That kicks off an instinct to try to roll over. I don;t know if this is still the practice but when I was in, if you were water safety qualifed first time around they asked you if you wanted to receive advanced training. (cont)

Maybe it's MCRD San Diego, as I remember PI all that was in the middle of nowhere with a fucked up looking swamp below filled with every disease known to man. But maybe that even changed at PI, can't even yell at Marines now a days.

when I was a Paris Island the slide for life was closed they said that is was to dangurous because a recruit fell off and broke his back but the A frame was still there and and that was scary as shit

My bunk mate and I did this and got what is equal to the current WSQ. This used to be big deal for the SDI because it was individual training effort. The top 10 shooters in the series were given the opportunity to become pistol qualed also. In general does the Corps sill have opportunities in Bootcamp anymore?

I was testing for Swim Qual 1. During the last technique my 220lb instructor took me 12' to the bottom, and my 155lb noodle of a body squirmed away to the surface. Upon arrival he said, "Oh freak no. You betta' kick away!" So I accidentally kicked him in the dick. Once again he took me 12' down, squeezed the remaining oxygen out of my body and used me as a spring board to get back to the surface. If the thought of drowning wasn't bad enough, he said I had to do every technique again. Oorah!

When I went through boot camp in 1995 in SD the slide for life was not over a pool. Like you said it was basically brown stagnant water not clear chlorinated pool water. Guess they changed it.

Joni Mendes I don't know how they teach swim qual now. Years ago they throw you in the water. You can do. Can do attitude. Last resort is to dog paddle. The pack will help you float. It has an air pocket. Stay motivated.

But when I went through in 2004 Parris Island there was no matting either, I don't know what's going on, but I'm not liking the change. The different looking uniforms - some are desert, others woodland - represents the stage of training a company is in. 1st phase recruits will start with their blouses buttoned to the top and trousers cuffed at the bottom with combat boots. 2nd phase will allow them to blouse their boots and unbutton the top blouse button. 3rd phase (at the very end, after the Crucible) means getting rid of the plastic ID tags on the colors, the involvement of their MCMAP belt (tan), involvement of Nylon skivvy shirts, and jungle boots to replace the worn combat boots.

Liam Shockley Bloused boots is when they are cutoff at the bottom usually using a band or strap which is how you are usually able to see our boots. During the first stages of recruit training, recruits are not allowed to blouse their boots but instead cuff them at the bottom.
