Actually, the idea that it was cheaper is something of a myth. Retired Disney animators have said that it actually probably was actually more expensive to do things this way because they would not only have to spend time studying the old movies and picking out scenes to reuse, but they would then have to hunt down old sketches and film reels. Now, keep in mind, some of these movies are almost twenty years older than the later ones. They would not always be in the best condition. This doesn't include the time just copying everything with the right character models, coloring them, animating them. It would have been less time consuming just to make an entire new scene.

Saving time and money by repeating scenes was a myth. They still had to redraw frame by frame and adapt it to the new characters so it was actually MORE effort than just drawing a new animation from scratch. Of all these clips, the one that surprised me the most was the reusing of Make Mine Music animation in The Great Mouse Detective. I mean, how did they even come to that idea?
@TGMD19863 жыл бұрын
Two possible scenarios: #1. The animators struggled to come up with an original concept so they had to grasp at straws to quickly reuse an old scene and hope that viewers wouldn't notice. OR: #2. They decided to make a subtle reference to the classic Disney animation but they couldn't make it too obvious. Hence why they used a less popular movie n' Make Mine Music.
@IdeaBox-dk5vj3 жыл бұрын
@@TGMD1986 Well, either way, they did a good job hiding it this time, as one of the few, if not the only release that Make Mine Music ever got ended up cutting out the Martins and Coys segment, meaning that you'll never find an uncut copy at all.

I must get this out before anyone draws conclusions (No pun intended): Personally, I find this technique quite fascinating. This video is NOT meant to reflect the technique in a negative light. I DO NOT believe Disney was "lazy" or "unmotivated" during this time. Yes, they WERE struggling financially after (And even before) Walt passed away. So it's easy to assume that they needed to cut-down on budgets and time, but I don't necessarily think that's the case. Wolfgang Reitherman. One of Disney's 'Nine Old Men', wanted to create something of a tradition. He purposefully acquired pre-animated cells from prior movies to add to newer works because HE believed it would result in a "higher quality product". When in reality, it proved to be much more painstaking than the original way of drawing NEW cells! Another one of Disney's 'Nine Old Men', Milt Kahl, did not share his feelings lightly: "I detest the use of-it just breaks my heart to see animation from 'Snow White' used in 'The Rescuers'. It kills me, and it just embarrasses me to tears." - Milt Kahl.

I actually would like to see a Disney movie with some of these recycled scenes in their 3D versions. Since they’re on a nostalgia market right now it might be fun poke fun like that.

They also "recycled" the original Star Wars trilogy. Didn't turn out that well this time tho...

Here comes the animators that criticized everything that is art related while they have their OC making poses and crossing their arms because they’re insecure to show their face.

I always thought it was just paying homage to the previous movies. It’s fun to see the comparisons and find those moments that work so well in multiple films.

I always considered them to be an inside joke. The elephant one with robin hood and jungle book (okay, all the references in robin hood, i watched it a lot as a kid) I always considered disney's inside jokes, references to the other movies. I noticed others in other movies, it was just something that kept them all tied together in a way. It didn't take anything away from the movies, I still loved them then, and still do to this day.

Most of the recycled animation is from times when the studio is undergoing huge financial stress with the death of Walt Disney

The 60s and 70s were a rough time for Disney. Also, a lot of animation in the "Phony King of England" sequence of Robin Hood was recycled from the dance sequences of Snow White and The Aristocats.

I saw a guy on tik tok who was talking about how lazy Disney is for recycling some clips. The whole comment section went off on him telling him that they weren't lazy and that animation is expensive so to save money they had to recycle some scenes.
@InsertCreativeusername_3 жыл бұрын
Also Disney was running low on money and at the time they were making Dumbo and Bambi. Dumbo is so short because Disney was trying to save money for Bambi. And lucky for them Bambi and Dumbo we're hits which saved them from going banckrupt.

Sounds like to me that he didn't have a lot of knowledge when it came to Disney's history and probably just wanted to show off for clicks and views. I don't know who he is but that just goes to show you that research is key.

You know, I can see it all now, except Goliath 2 and Lambert the Sheepish Lion, because I don't remember those 2 movies.
@TGMD19863 жыл бұрын
They're not official full length features. They're 10-15 minute shorts. Both I believe are narrated by Sterling Holloway (I know Lambert is at least), and Goliath 2 is most recognized for being the first real experiment with an animation process called 'Xerography'. Without it's succes we wouldn't have movies like 101 Dalmatians and The Rescuers!
@brianhalljr.26373 жыл бұрын
@@TGMD1986 Oh, okay. So, that's why Goliath 2 and Lambert the Sheepish Lion are not recognizable films.
@TGMD19863 жыл бұрын
@@brianhalljr.2637 It's probably statistically true that general audiences have not yet discovered all (If any) shorts compared to the films because, yes, they do tend to be shorter and simpler when it comes to story and narrative. Unlike the films where they feel very epic and grand, and that's why they are 10x more popular. Now that wasn't the case at all when animation first started in the 20's but we all now how that ended lol.

Also in The beauty and the best, there's a scene where Maurice is riding his horse (a little before arriving at the beast's castle) and you can see a shot of the sky with threatening clouds. This is recylced from The sleepy hollow (short Disney's film from 1949), where Ichabod enters in a dark forest in the night, but the clouds where in the shape of hands, which is even more threatening.

Talk about a coincidence I was making a review for "The Rescuers" (I feel the movie doesn't get enough love) and was thinking they re-used shots from the Jungle Book. Now I know where and when. By the way what on earth is Goliath 2? Thought I knew about all the old Disney movies but this is a new one.
