Recycling clay with the pillowcase method

Clay that becomes too dry can be recycled back into a useable state. In this video I took all the different scrap clays in my studio (white, black, red, and brown stonewares) and combined them into a new clay mix.
I didn't know what look I would get when all the clays were combined, but I was pleasantly surprised by the light buff colored results. If you are mixing different clays together, just make sure they fire to the same temperature!

I love the pillow case idea, another KZbinr potter does similar, dry scraps smashed in a pillow case then soaked whilst still in the pillow case, then she takes them out, hangs then up and flattens the clay (still in the pillowcase!) on plaster bats! Love the pillow case ideas, I find wet mid-recycle clay really hard to touch so it's a game changer! Nice work :) other Potter is @PotteryCrafters

another potter I watch simply puts all their scraps into water as they collect them; once they have enough to recycle they mix the already soft clay and put it out on plaster bats. That method you would be able to skip the breaking up of the hard clay pieces but still use your pillowcase instead of the plaster bats. You would lose less clay to the breaking process, have less labor without having to smash up all the hard clay and get a more homogeneous result as all the clay would be very soft to easily mix.

Water is a great breeding ground for stink. I prefer to keep clay scraps dry but I break up pieces as I put them in the reclaim bucket. I aim for 1-2 inch pieces, the smaller the better for quickly hydrating and mixing.

Why wouldn't you just add a bit less water mix and spread it out in a plaster bat? It'd be ready to wedge in 2-3 days!

This is very helpful. What do you do with the pillow case after reclaiming the clay? Do you hose it down and then wash it? Or do you keep reusing it? I would like to avoid clay dust coming from the pillowcase.

In your clay working opinion, could one crush up broken Bricks the same way, dry it, and make new bricks? Since they are made of clay.

Clay can be recycled this way as long as its still in its raw material state and hasn't gone through a firing process. So no, not if the bricks have been fired.

Don't you need to filter the liquid clay to remove solid things that might be in there?

Definitely something to consider if tools or other materials are finding their way into your bucket. So far I haven't had that problem.

I have 2 questions, what kind of pillow case did you use and when you take the clay out, do you have to clean the pillowcase or can you keep reusing the pillowcase without cleaning it?

Hey McKenna, I try to use a natural fiber like cotton so that the moisture can evaporate, and I just reuse the pillowcase without rinsing it.
