For those wondering what the song means: The song is about a young Cossack who was walking to battle when suddenly he wants to return home. You can hear this by the soft voices of the choir, which are then juxtaposed by the stern, encouraging voices of his peers telling him to go on to battle. Examples: 0:47 is the young Cossack saying how he wants to return home, and 1:00 is his peers telling him to go faster to battle.

Translation: Don Cossack regiments were going through the steppes One Cossack lowered his head in despair Oi, one Cossack was missing his home He dropped the reins on the horses' mane The fleece on his hat was messy Thoughts of home were tormenting him He looked into the distance of the grey steppe But there was nothing to see Cossack shook his head And melancholically spoke to his comrades: ''My young heart is hurting, oh brothers how much i miss home!'' Flying past the road Cossack scattered his thoughts and sadness He raised his dashing horse on its' hind legs And his sharp saber was whistling in the charge And so through the steppes, regiments loud with glory Were going and singing like nightingales: ''Kovilnaya, my dear little homeland receive a bow from the Red Horsemen'' (In the original version it's ''from the Tsar's Cossacks'' - Tsarskyh Kazakov was changed into Krasnih Konnikov by the Red Army).

There were many Cossacks who willingly fought with the Red Army and were highly respected by their comrades.
@dvchel8 жыл бұрын
Yes I know. It's a shame Western Scholars, documentaries and news outlets put most attention towards the Cossacks that switched sides with the Nazi's along with the many different etnic groups inhabiting the vast land of the USSR . The ethnic groups included the Russians, Ukrainians, Estonians, Chechens, Armenians, Tatars, Kalmyks, Manchu's etc. Even Stalin fell victim to this tragically. The 1944 deportation of many Caucasian, Baltic or Uralic people is the result of this. Even when many people belonging to these ethnic groups and fought in the Red Army were highly decorated.

here are lyrics tovarischi! : marching through the steppe is Cossack regiment from the Don one Cossack lowered his head Oy, longing one cossack was for his home The rein was dropped onto the horse's mane Oy, longing one cossack was for his home The rein was dropped onto the horse's mane his hair spread in the wind He was tormented by the thoughts of home Ah! He looks far into the pale steppe and in this distance there is nothing to see Ah! He looks far into the pale steppe and in this distance there is nothing to see The Cossack shook his head And said to his comrades with burden "Oh! hurts my young heart " "Brothers how I wish to be at home now" "Oh! hurts my young heart " "Brothers how I wish to be at home now" Fly quicker little road blow away the cossacks sadness and worry Ah! he reared the horse His sharp sabre is whistling in gallop Ah! he reared the horse his sharp sabre is whistling in gallop in the steppe the regiments with great fame all marched and marched, singing like nightingales Kovyl'na, my homeland accept, a bow from the red horsemen! Kovyl'na, my homeland accept a bow from the red horsemen! Kovyl'na, my homeland accept a bow from the red horsemen!

The meaning of the tragedy is understandable through the voices and their differents tones. We do perfectly understand what it is about. That's the beauty of it. We understand the horror a man is going through even if we don't speak (this wonderful tongue) Russian. we understand the battle where this man will die when all he wants is to go back home. I'm in tears each time I listen to that song. It summarizes the mankind and the horror it has been created by it, the war.

Crazy because I'm reading this book about the Russian revolution right now and the Cossacks were mostly forces of reaction, but in the February revolution in more than one occasion they sided with the great masses.
