Red Baron 3-D: Intro+Campaign

Though one of the very few WWI sims, Red Baron was simply damn good. Or in my case, once you upgraded RB2 to RB3-D that is. You may wonder.
Not like your little side-show in the sky can actually affect the course of the war. The grand Campaign is about as immobile as the Great War itself. Of course, you're too busy racking up a chest full of metals to care.
Sorry I missed the results, but let's just say that it was a rampant slaughter. Really ugly. Came out with 4 kills though.

Best flight sim ever I think. Nothing has replaced it. Was obsessed with this game from 1998-2000, it got me into radio control model aircraft. I was in a virtual Cyber Squadron called Jasta 18 and flew as J18_Ritter von Fear. Good times.

I played this when I was seven on the Windows 95 Packard Bell and we had the sidewinder flight stick. Also played human genome soldier and the hellbender demo. I spent so much time with that flight stick. Loved it.

A spectacular game. I remember one mission where I eluded 3 enemy planes by hiding in the clouds. My plane was shot to pieces and I had to yaw hard right to keep it from stalling. When I finally landed at my home base it felt like great sex.

Those flak cannons! I used to play whole missions on normal speed, and entering into no man's land was always tense. Once I watched my wingman take a hit, lose his wing, and plummet slowly towards the ground. Great memories

I remember when ur plane was burning that u hit "jjj" an the pilot jumped out of it with no parashout. everytime u had 3 options: 1) dead 2) imprisoned 3) injured and back home XD The mission took sometimes >1 h and u couldnt save it.

Sometimes the hardest part of the mission was getting back home and landing safely. If your plane was shot up it would fly and handle poorly, making landing difficult. A crash landing could result in death and a failed mission. Or sometimes, if it wasn't too bad, an ambulance would come out and take you to a field hospital where you would recover. Really a great sim! With fabulous enemy AI, best in the business.

I remember this game. It had a lot of dynamics like a bullet can hit an enemy body or yourself. Blow an engine out and lose oil pressure/start a fire. Lose a wing and your plane would favor a roll to one side, but you could limp most of this stuff. Loss of a horizontal stabilizer was always certain doom.

I guess RB3D was phantastic in its days, and I wonder how I could have missed it. But there is a great successor, which offers all the lovely details I see here in this video, tons of historical knowledge and aircraft skins, and a wonderful single-player immersion which is unique in these days - it's called: "Wings Over Flanders Fields" Some of it's creators had already been working on RB3D, or on mods for it. Hmm I initially wanted to get it but i’m not sure if it’ll work on Windows 10 and with my Logitech Extreme 3d Pro joystick. I also heard the missions are very unforgiving with no tutorial to teach you the basics.

Red Baron II CD-ROMs in '97 - later patched to RED Baron 3D - when I got hands on a Voodoo² in '98. +1 Logitech Extreme 3d Pro = METOO (and still working!) ;-)

I have yet to try this one, is it running in DOS? The engine seems to be more advanced, but my heart is still with Flying Corps from Rowan Software. Can't find my CD of that one, would be great if someone could upload the disk.

Loved this game! I never played as an American though, I always played as either the Germans, French, or British. Oddly enough I had fimaly on both sides of the First World War and none of them were Americans yet so I'm not related to anyone in U.S. Air Service at that time.
