This is a story about health from the perspective of Indigenous (Heiltsuk) culture. It is a foundational and personal piece which defines the meaning of culturally safe care and underlines the importance of cultural safety to health, well-being, and healing.
The film is an edit of two interviews interwoven with footage of the interior of the Heiltsuk “big house” in Bella Bella-a cedar longhouse designed and built for community events and ceremonies-the first such structure built in nearly a century after such activities were outlawed by the Canadian government.
This documentary was filmed in the communities of Bella Bella on the unceded and traditional territories of the Heiltsuk peoples.
