Notes on TB: TB is contagious and you catch it from droplets spread through breathing, but a lot of people are immune. It's like, 1/3 of all people are exposed don't catch it and have not symptoms just staying dormant inside you. It's part of why they could live in community for so long without wiping everyone out, and why sometimes people would get it years later after exposure.

As someone that has obviously played RDR1 (which I also have), do you feel that the story of RDR2 kind of ruined some of the story of RDR1? I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, but after playing RDR2 I was left thinking to myself, "Why did I have to do xyz to this person? He was cool."
@plexyglass429 Жыл бұрын
@@mlbrown76 not at all. I feel that Javier's actor really wanted to flesh out his own character and he did, almost to a detriment. But I think it still works as Javier was blindly loyal and conflicted. When in isolation he chose to believe in dutch even after all that had happened. And bill was a proud fool, not wanting to admit that he was stupid enough to be tricked by dutch, going fully into the deep end. He never cared about folk, he even says "that's against the rules" to Arthur when he helps the natives. They were both bad men, but Javier was manipulated and corrupted by Dutch's silver tongue. Rdr2 enhances rdr1, I don't feel it ruins the story at all
@mlbrown76 Жыл бұрын
@@plexyglass429 I can somewhat see your point of view when it comes to Bill. However, we seem to disagree more when it comes to Javier. In RDR1 John constantly talks about how his old gang left him to die but I never saw that to be the case while playing RDR2. Dutch may have betrayed him a couple of times, but I don't feel like Bill or Javier ever left John for dead. John talks about Javier at the beginning of the RDR1 mission 'The Gates of El Presidio' and says, "We was close once. But he never cared for me or anybody else, not any of his so called brothers. He left me to die, when he had the chance to save me." At the time this was pretty much all I knew about Javier and I didn't have a reason to disbelieve that dialog because I had yet to see the events of RDR2 for myself. However, after playing RDR2 I know that John's version of the past wasn't completely accurate. I know that Javier had to help convince Arthur to go look for him in the 2nd mission of RDR2, so John was mistaken when he said that Javier never cared for him. Had it not been for Javier, John would have likely froze to death on the mountain. And at no point did I feel like Javier turned his back on John by the end of RDR2. Knowing what I knew during my playthrough of RDR1, which only came from John's recounts of the past, I thought that John's old gang all turned on him so I didn't think twice about what happened to Bill or Javier in RDR1. However, after seeing the events of the past for myself (as well as knowing that John was a crappy father to Jack and abandoned the gang himself), some parts of the story of RDR1 doesn't feel the same as when I first played it.
@plexyglass429 Жыл бұрын
@@mlbrown76Some camp interactions with Javier, John and Abigail show some falling out. We must also make room for John being angry with him, perhaps being an unreliable narrator after 15 years of not seeing him. The only reason rdr2 could've really ruined Javier is ironically Javier's actor himself, as he really wanted to flesh out Javier more

Listening to this again, with the GTA Red Dead Easter Egg in mind, I think that the fantastical elements of the Redemption games were added by Jack when he wrote the in-universe books. Time travel and vampires, for example, would've been ideas he could've conceivably come across as a result of his voracious reading (time travel from either Mark Twain's 1889 "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" or H.G. Well's 1899 "The Time Machine" and vampires most likely from Bram Stoker's 1897 novel "Dracula").

Some corrections: the game makes up a fictional tribe, Wapiti (which, as I understand it, is just the word for "Elk" from one of the indigenous languages). This is the tribe that Rains Fall and Eagle Flies are from. As far as I know, Wounded Knee is NOT mentioned. However, there are certainly references to massacre of Native American tribes. Rains Fall talks about some of this. We can find a stranger out in the wild that talks about being involved in a massacre and how the military fort he served at properly, brutally tortured and killed Native American prisoners. There is also, ofc, talk of Col. Favours withholding medical aid/vaccines meant for the Wapiti people. And there are many, MANY mentions of land being stolen, the tribes being forced to move (oftentimes with violence), deals being breached by the government etc. And ofc, in the epilogue Rains Fall (if we run into him at a train station, I forget which one. Maybe Annesburg) mentions how his people aren't really a people anymore as many were forced off their land and then later fled to Canada etc. We can also find an old and (if my memory serves well) burned "American Indian Boarding School" in the West Elizabeth (I believe this is the one. Kinda in the Southern side of the state). This is where Indigenous kids were often forcibly sent so they can be forcibly assimilated into White American society. Their cultures were denigrated and they were forced to give up their Native names, religion, languages etc. They were provided with basic Western education. Inside, we find a page from a spelling test a Native American student took. Naturally, horrific abuse of these children took place at these establishments, as well. Kids developed PTSD, substance abuse issues, suicidal ideation (many succumbing to this). I was very surprised to find this site in the game as to my memory I have never seen this type of institution being addressed in any Western movie or show (from what I have seen). I think I read about in one of those Horrible Histories book MANY years ago when I was in 5th grade. Also, recently I've been reading "Killers of the Flower Moon" by David Grann in preperation for the upcoming Scorsese movie. The author went into detail about the purpose and operation of these schools. You might have read about mass graves (of indigenous children and teens) being found on the grounds of many such schools in Canada etc.

I think its funny that Chase of all people hates Micah. Considering Chase IS Micah. At least how he says he plays games. Micah is an absolute chaos goblin who wants to watch the world burn and live to tell the tale. Which is EXACTLY how Chase would play this game, by self admission XD

To be fair, I think the thing that makes Micah truly awful is how much of a coward he is about what he does. Sure, he’s the embodiment of chaos, but if he gets called out for something he did, he’ll say something about how it wasn’t his idea or even him that did it

In all of storytelling throughout the ages, one of the most vindictive things is straight up saying "this guy looks like a rat-faced bastard," then showing that he IS a rat-face bastard before finally revealing that the rat-faced bastard got what he deserved in the end. Very well done, Neil. Also I love both Monty and Neil getting a bit teary eyed near the end and drawing parallels to John's new life and the life Arthur could never have, especially since Arthur gave him this life in the end by choosing to chase after "The Right Thing." It's so hard to capture the sheer amount of emotion and character building that exists in RDR2; as a giant weeb myself, I had one of my favorite streamers on playing it in the background, expecting for it to be mildly entertaining, and I was absolutely sobbing at the end. Not worth the crunch, never, but I'm so happy I got to expereince that raw story how I did. Neil really, REALLY had his work cut out for him with the multiude of minor details and small moments that snowball into this beautiful and crushing ending, and he seriously did such a great job. I loved coming back to this game, and as always you all made it immensely entertaining. Thank you!

I wish chase could be a bit less cynical when he's not 100% excited about things on this show. I know that he doesn't dislike particular plot points nearly as much as it comes across but it is certainly grating after monty and Neil respected him enough to not try to poke holes through the narrative when he's in the hot seat, so to say. I, unfortunately, find myself thinking "I wish he would just listen" very often when chase starts to interject. Regardless, I enjoyed listening to Neil lead for these past 2 uploads and I can't wait to hear more. Maybe I missed it in the outro, but who is leading for the bioshock series? I assume it is monty as he has videos about it on the other channel but that would mean that Chase won't lead an episode until at least 2024, which is honestly a bit surprising to hear! I really hope I don't sound too harsh here, I know this podcast is just you all pal-ing around so please don't take this comment too to-heart. All-in-all you 3 put out wonderful content that I'm grateful to be able to listen to throughout my long overnight shifts. Have a good one, yall. One cool thing about the oil factory mission. In my playthrough, after Arthur runs away from the german family and wakes up on the street, there's a message from the game that says that your cut from this job is 0$. And then game gives you another message that reminds you about how the gang splits earned money between the members. Idk if it's supposed to be here or it's just a bug, but it's such a good timing to tell you that you're not in the gang anymore.

A good bit of the music in Chapter 5, along with missions such as Fleeting Joy (Milton attacks the gang after their reunion), and Icarus & Friends (hot air balloon) was done by Colin Stetson. He's a fucking wizard on a bass saxophone. He has this circular breathing technique which makes it sound as of he's playing crazy solos on his instrument without taking a breath. He tapes various mics to the instrument and his neck etc. to add percussion and echo-y screams to the songs and he does it all in one-take. Any RDR2 fans who haven't listened to his music outside of this game... Do yourself a favour and check out his albums: New History Warfare, Vol.1, 2, & 3. He also composed for Hereditary and will be composing for the upcoming anime adaptation of Junji Ito's Uzumaki.

I love this game! I don't know how many times I've played through the campaign with 100% completion each time. I think you all did a great job recapping the game. I listened to all of this and part 1. There were some very minor details that you all got wrong that didn't really effect the story. For example, the mother of Francis Sinclair (the time traveler) was holding him as a baby instead of being pregnant when Author returned; and you all kept saying that Author and Sadie rode to Copper Head's Landing to save Abigail, but it was Van Horn (they told Tilley to take Jack to Copper Head's Landing and wait for Sadie and Abigail. However, those were small details and I only caught them because of the number of times I've played through the game. I would love for you all to do this for Red Dead Redemption. I played RDR1 when it was originally released, so going into this game I knew a little more than someone that didn't play RDR1. Like which gang members would definitely survive RDR2 because they are in RDR1, which happens after the events of RDR2. Playing RDR1 without the context of RDR2 was a great experience. However, I don't know if I would have felt about some of the choices and missions that were in RDR1 after knowing the events of RDR2. I'd be interested to hear someone else's take on this idea.

One of the things I inherited from my grandfather was a love for westerns. It wasn’t until I found three differently labeled collections of westerns that I realized that there’s a big difference between “cowboy westerns,” “gunslinger westerns” and “outlaw westerns.” These games do a really good job of mixing those three together as a nod to fans of each subgenre. That being said, I just got to the part where you guys are discussing how the era of cowboys is at an end by the end of RDR II, but that’s not fully true, it’s that the era of outlaws is coming to an end.
