I played this scene three hours after us kids had been told our Dad had been diagnosed with stage 4, and it was night and raining both in the game and outside. The definition of atmospheric gaming. You can't manufacture moments like this. You can't hire a bunch of programmers and tell them to sit down and make magic. It takes talent, it takes a character you care about, it takes a setting you feel apart of. Rockstar are the kings of this sort of thing. Think about the first time you used Bullet Time in Max Payne. The first time you got behind the wheel of a car and tinkered with the radio in GTA 3 (or, for me, getting on a Faggio and blasting "I Ran"). Rockstar has hit so many emotional home runs, but this was a fucking grand slam. You can use the word "epic" to describe it and not feel like you're overusing the word.

Nope, there's no cougars in Mexico in the game. There's bobcats but pretty sure they only attack when you're on foot and even then it's extremely rare, they usually just make a noise and run away. Only danger from animals at this point would be if there was a pack of wolves and you were riding very slowly and not bothering to avoid them.

I like reading the comments and seeing how we all had different experiences when we first entered Mexico. Some arrived in the day, some at sunset, some at night, some in the rain, very cool how even with the dynamic setting, we all still got a great experience from it.

cuzthechicksdigit For me, I started early morning just before sunrise. After missing the opportunity to capture Bill on the night raid, he escaped to Mexico. In frustration on my way to the border, you could see the sky starting to brighten up from dusk to dawn. I rode as fast as possible so as not to lose his trail. As I made my way into Mexico, I was taken back by the scenery of the open land and of the plateau in the distance where the sun was starting to rise on that somewhat cloudy morning. That visual display was made more euphoric with that beautiful acoustic melody as I guided John Marshton on his horse through Mexico in hopes of finding the man we were looking for.

I walked so slowly that the song ended before I reached the checkpoint. I felt such a transcendental euphoria in that moment that it's been etched into my brain even though it's been years. I didn't even realize my experience was unique to me (sun setting) at the time! RDR is such an amazing game.

So... this is the scene critics, players, and gaming journalists went crazy for. They all praise this scene for being perfect. LOL of course it is. I played it too. The very first time I played this game and this scene popped up I didn't go between that wall I took the high ground and I went towards the edge overlooking Mexico and that part of the song "its so far, so far away" hit right on the spot as I approached the cliff to get a great view of Mexico. Showing them this will not do anything unfortunately. You honestly had to have been there playing the game. Putting in all that time building John up from scratch from nothing. Completing all those missions. Seeing Mexico on the map but never being able to cross over into it. And then that moment when you start that mission and you realize that raft is crossing. You already get excited and can't wait to see the new landscapes. Then you start your journey to explore and out of no where that song starts and all the planets align. Anyone just watching this video who never played the game just sees a guy riding a horse to music. To those of us who played the game... well it was an epic moment and put shiver down your spine.

been a gamer for 20 years, and i will forever say that this exact moment is the most perfect moment in gaming history. the melancholy song, John's journey behind him, the journey ahead, his hopes for his life and his family, his fears for them too. nothing ever created can perfectly explain a fictional man and his story as well as these 5 minutes. not Aeris' Theme as she is killed. not Leliana's Song as she finally opens up. not even To Zanakand that plays even through battles when the group reach the fabled ruins. no, John Marsten's character and story is perfectly encapsulated by a 3 minute song, and the emotion, i believe, will NEVER be topped.

Red Dead Redemption is an art, not just a game for little kids to play instead of going outside. I'm glad you feel this way for games because we're running out of this in games. My teacher tried to tell me that games are only codes that are point less. I did not say anything because I knew she could not even understand what a good game is, i'd play this game night, and day if PS3 where almost out dated, and don't feel bad if a tear falls from your eye, that means you love that genere of games and that's a good thing to have.

And paint is nothing but pigmented liquid on a canvas. And literature is nothing but dried ink on a page. And music is just sounds that happen. I couldn't take that teacher serious if his or her view were that limited. Games like Red Dead are something special because of the feeling you have from playing and the interpretation you adhere from the story. Scenes like above are the reason why this medium is so relevant to learn from in today's society.

To my recollection, this was the most unexpectedly immersive experience in a video game that completely caught me off guard. I remember playing this for the first time. One second, you’re shooting your way through enemies same as usual, next you’re feeling incredibly attached to the game’s main character and story in a way anyone would feel playing this scene for the first time, unknowing of what’s to come. Especially if you’re playing alone.

One of the best moments in gaming history... Everything about this scene is just amazing: The song, the environment,... But the best part is that it's not scripted... And that is the reason why Rockstar is one of the best developer company out there. They can create a particular emotional scene where the player doesn't have the feeling that he's on rails. During this scene, you can literally go anywhere you want, slow down or even stop to admire the vue and yet the game will still be able to provide the same intensity of emotion... This is the proof that you don't need heavily scripted sequences like in recently critically acclaimed games to provide emotions... In short, it's the combination of absolute freedom and emotionality that makes this scene very unique. Thank you Rockstar for this amazing moment... A lot of developers could learn from you...

It starts to kinda hit deep in the feels watching this scene after playing RDR2 and thinking about how Arthur's dying wish was for John and his family to get away from all this. And this scene just resonates how John gets pulled back into it. Ir con John, por México, cabalgando más allá de la frontera para capturar o matar a sus antiguos hermanos, le da una vibra nostálgica, José González hizo un trabajo increíble, gracias Rockstar. "Unshaken" is more refined. How could it not? They had years to take what made this special and amp it up. But this. This has all the power of innocence. I bet they had no idea the reaction it would get. Someone probably thought "hey, this ride to Mexico is kinda longish, let's put a song to break the monotony. I've been playing games since the arcades in the late eighties. I've seen amazing cinematic moments and I've seen amazing gameplay moments. But this was the FIRST time I got to be the actor in a cinematic transition. It was so weird when the music started playing that I almost let go of the controller, convinced that this was some cutscene. It took a few seconds for it to sink in: "No I'm still controlling the horse. I'm going to Mexico".

First time I played this scene, it was 2am; I had just gotten home after a late shift tending bar at a casino. I was aching and tired. I took a shower, poured myself a tumbler of scotch and took a tramadol. I sat there in my bathrobe and fought my way into Mexico as the sun set. By the time Marston mounted up the sky was just about the same colour as it was in the real world: starry and mellow. I started the trot to whatever counted for civilisation, and then the song started playing. There have been moments in my life that will haunt my memories forever, but I never expected to experience one in a goddamn video game.
