I broke down and bought an ACOG 4x with red dot on top. Seemed a bit bulky at first, but after zeroing both and some extra rounds at the range I have really gotten to like it. All my other platforms have Sig Romeo5’s and I love them. Simple, affordable. Very effective.

Thanks buddy! I was USN, qualified on M14 with irons. Trying to be more modern. An M4 with ACSS and red dot seems very practical.

I have a long neck . I've personally been using YHM Full Flat Top 1/2" Riser for almost 8 years now . That 1.93 - 2.25" height works better for me . Even with LPVO in the prone 1.7 or 1.93 still works best for me . I use 1.93 for my Most of my LPVO Mounts . On my CSASS / DMR 6ARC Setup I use ADM 1.7 Mount . Absolutely phenomenal height for me when in prone for longer strings of fire . Unity Riser and FTC MAGNIFIER Mount are by far my favorite but the YHM 1/2" Riser gets the job done at 1/8 of the cost

We all need back up Iron sights on our rifles. I don't care how good your latest and greatest optic is. Anything can happen.

As a dude with titanium fused neck, I personally LOVE the taller mounts. I'm running 2.04" mounts for my LPVO scopes and my red dots are up around 2.26" or so.

Why are folks harping on about Irons so much? Yes, I qualified with them at basic. Then I got to my unit and found out why optics are so superior. My ACOG took insane abuse as a route clearance team leader. Never had issues hitting what I needed to. Close or far. All that said. Eotech on Unity riser is the master race.

Can you do a video on how to find the right riser height if one goes for the top mount rds and what do you think of angled mounts?
@paulwilson8672 Жыл бұрын
It is interesting about the height of sights. As a kid a I used a Ruger 10/22 for rabbits and squirrels. The sights are on the barrel. If you added a scope you had to change your body mechanics for the higher scope. I never had a scope. I go into the Marine Corps and the M16A1 with the sights above the barrel and on the carrying handle. I adjusted the body mechanics in order to qual with it. If you added a red dot to an M16A1 it above the iron sights which was already above the barrel. (Closer to the barrel the more accurate) Eventually we go to the A4 and now everything is back to being close to the top of the barrel. Plus you add all the different levels that you guys were using I don't know how you managed the body reference on the rifle to get a consistent shot. Great topic and a great Video!!! Thanks for the history lesson.

I liked the ACOG in its hay day but yeah I now prefer red dots or the flip out of the flip out of the way magnifiers. Agreed I like primary arms optics with the ACSS reticle.

I have a Marine dad and Ranger uncle. So I grew up with all the cool 80's guns including AUGs, Colts etc. I went in in 94 and it was a constant evolution until i got out in 2016. Now it's weird to do the carry handle height risers. The IDF have had Trijicon and Meprolight optics on the carry handle forever. Now if they had them on the back instead of the front they would have been 30yrs ahead. But I love my TA31 and red dot

Great video. Interesting history and to see someone who was there before optics were mainstream (I’m turning 50 and remember when irons where all anyone had to shoot with. Unless you had a hunting scope). Again, great video.

Recently switched to a unity fast micro on my fsb guns. It’s a great combo for me. You can switch from optic to irons with moving anything on the firearm. There’s no fsb distraction if I run a magnifier. I also have a big head so I make decent contact with my chin/cheek. 2.26 isn’t for everyone but I works amazing for me.

A little off topic but personally I'd choose to run backup irons. Should be proficient enough to use irons on any firearm I choose to train with. Optics may have gotten more reliable but the advantage irons have over optics, never needs batteries.

Another very good video. Thank you. It's interesting to watch gun practices change. A few years ago, if while handling a hand gun you accidentally flagged yourself, you got yelled at. Now we stick them down the front of our pants. Also, we used to make fun of the Russians for mounting their optics so high on their rifles and using a chin weld. It just goes to show you there is no one perfect way to do things.

With 1.93s being quite prevalent for all types of optics including LPVOs and with 2.26 being more common place including Unity having their lpvo mount at 2.05, I’d say that 2.26 lpvo mounts are the future. The 1x on the nicer LPVOs are nice enough to passive aim through and with stock cheek risers, the 4th point of contact remains. I guess this is reinforced by the fact that some mounts put the dots even higher than 2.26 or the previous top of the carry handle height with the GBRS mount, hell unity just released a top mount for their 2.05 lpvo mount so that’s also taller than the typical 2.26, I think it’s more similar to a carry handle height of roughly 2.5? Chin weld, cheek weld, it wouldn’t matter as long as it’s a solid point of contact. The cheek risers are all coming out for a reason. HOB will just be something one should keep in mind with via training. Besides, the overall gain in height from a standard cowitness isn’t even more than 2 inches even for the taller mounts as your standard cowitness heights are around 1.54 or less, with the tallest mounts being 2.91 which nets almost 1.5 inch difference. Account for the rail over bore of 1.25 inches and that’s roughly 2.75 and 4.25 inches HOB respectively at point blank. Something to keep in mind while zeroing while also remembering velocity. Sometimes a 50/200 zero becomes a 36/200 with specific combinations of velocity and HOB. Overall, I like the taller optic trend since a heads up shooting position is the same as shooting with a pistol. Peripheral is unobstructed and less strain in the neck and shoulders. While ideally great for NVG passive aiming, I think the ergonomic benefit justifies the trend in itself, that is of course with training too.

I went with the cheapest option after removing the handle from my AR-15 upper: A Romeo and Juliet combo. I can use the red dot close and I have the magnifier zero'd at 300 yards hitting 12" targets. It doesnt get anymore versatile than that. LPVO you have a close quarter disadvantage and ACOG might not be as accurate as a magnifier. But i havent tested that yet

Hey coch, have you tried out the flip magnifiers with the Unity risers? I like that it in conjunction with an Eotech gives me NV, a true 1x, and some magnification if I need it. I’d love to hear your thoughts on civilian application and what makes sense

I've been telling people for years that a red dot on a carry handle still works, especially for patrolling. The 1.93 riser is basically the same thing.

Won't you have better POA/POI at more distances when you have less high over bore? That's where my hesitation comes from with using really high risers, is I don't want to have to worry about adjusting my point of aim as much.

It seems like the back up/folding rear sight is taking the premier rail space near the shooter eye as opposed to the primary aiming solution. Would it be beneficial to switch places between these for something like the ACOG scenario which would reduce that eye relief gap that Coch described? Perhaps trading off superior eye relief for a shorter sight radius on the back up solution?

I I wish I had the money to try different mounts and optics. to see which works best for me, but me being a pathetic useless loser poor! I have to just go with what I can, when I can, but primarily I just stick to what I got because use it was a gift. otherwise I would have to come up with a magical aiming point, for the reason of not being able to afford an optic or even a cheap set of decent irons! Ammo costs takes up little extra cash I can come up with!
