In RE to some of the shooting positions. I assure you, they're quite safe. I'm shooting from a elevated position down into a "cup" like area. The visual of the cars in the backdrop is mostly a by product of a wide FoV camera and a high angle. That being said, I still take fault here. Is it safe: I think so Could it be a lot safer: yes. I'll do better.

I get the downsides you mentioned. But for reals, the neck relief from a Unity riser is such a plus for me. Absolute cowitness sights murder my neck. I’m a small guy but the way I hold my rifle I can still get a cheek weld with the riser and it feels stable. Also it makes me look cool, which is +20 horsepower

Your comments about stability especially with a magnifier is exactly why I went with a 1.93" instead for my setup. I still have my cheek on the stock with that height for that extra bit of stability, unlike the Unity 2.26" height where I'm definitely going off of a chinweld and prone shooting wasn't pleasant for me. Of course like you said, I know folks that can still get a solid cheekweld even with a 2.26" so that's just down to body/head structure and genetics for personal preference/comfort. "It depends."

I couldn’t agree more the only benefit to any of these risers is either for situational awareness for a CQB environment or shooting under Nods. My team followed the tactical hype for awhile. We realized after 6k or so rounds that these blow ass on any other weapon system other then one specifically utilized for one of those scenarios. We still employ them on our CQB systems but shit canned them on ever other weapon to maintain shooting principles such as cheek weld and recoil mitigation.

Something interesting the guys at Orion Training Group mentioned with their Keenu Risers, a similar concept to the Unity but longer, is that they put a Wilcox FTS mount for a thermal system on the front, giving them both thermal and NV passive aiming solutions. And if they really desire to, they can run the 3x FTC Magnifier on the back. A lot of optics capability, but you can strip it down to just the EOTech.

Although I'm not sure how those play with the flip to center mounts 🤔 I think that's the only limitation to most builds similar to theirs, usually based on 10.5's with suppressors that stay on all the time... Remember kids, there isn't any "weird proprietary crap" going on with the 2.26 height mount except for the height itself. The Unity mount has a fairly specific use (i.e. makes shooting with night vision and comms headsets easier and less stressful on the neck) and people seem to either forget that or more or less ignore the company's information about the product in favor of their own Cliff's Notes/tl;dr version. Most of the people who do the kind of shooting this mount height is aimed at don't do a lot of prone shooting. They go transported to the target, walk/run in, kill who they need to, take what they need to, and leave. It isn't aimed at competition shooters, line infantry, "REECE" setups, etc. That doesn't mean that some people won't get benefit out of it even then, but the average buyer shouldn't get mad at the company when they buy something that isn't designed for their intended purpose.

The Unity is wonderful in its application. I have had one on my 10.5 for a while and love it, although it took some getting used to. I personally hate FTS mounts, but feel most rifles need magnification, if for no reason other than PID. It allows me to have some extra capability on a gun that was built for working mostly indoors. Please do an episode on ammo. You can discuss the differences between zero ammo vs practice ammo, as well as “Game Day Ammo”. There’s a lot that goes into this because, obviously your zero is different from what you normally shoot everyday. You could discuss the relationship there as well as why you prefer a specific loading for a shtf scenario. But then there’s the nuance of why you zero your gun for one thing and shoot another. I also want to know what you are shooting. I like 55gr m193 clone bullshit cuz it’s everywhere and cheap and repeatable. But I’d like to see what you’re shooting and hear your reasoning why.

Only downside is it kinda kills backup irons. The other Unity risers let you still use them but not the Eotech riser. Not big on offset irons so still trying to think of a backup aiming system. The 1.93 didn't seem significantly more than the lower 1/3 mount, but just enough to be more comfy, and not be too outrageous in the prone. Bonus points is that with the spacers for my mount on a magnifier it still works with the 1.93 mount and I don't have to make the investment in another mount for it as well.

For me the Unity has the edge over the ADM simply for its cleaner field of view when the magnifier is not in use. It's not a huge deal, but the more I can see in front of me the better. If Unity made a mount for the HM3X I'd swap the ADM out as well.

My reason for using the Unity red dot mount is almost exclusively down to the fact I often have fogging issues with my rifle, and the Unity backup sight works with the Front sight post. But then again I'm talking about a light rifle used around my land more like a utility item than a gucci setup. It is nice to use with my PVS-14 but it's not really my main goal with that rifle. So for my purposes, it works really well and I don't even have to buy goofy looking canted sights / mounts.

Yep - all valid points here. There will always be trade offs with mounts in general. So you just weigh those against what type and or level of shooting you "do". I actually prefer the Unity until I have had to shoot prone...That is it's achilles heel (having a 10rn mag accessible helps) and like he said - have that Chiropractor on speed dial.

Great video! I’m just a budget buying poor but if anyone is interested in raising an optic up, UTG makes 1/4, 1/2, 3/4,and 1 inch picatinny risers. Not as sexy as unity but you can choose a height that works for your body type for 10% the price of a unity mount. I’ve used one on two rifles for the last three years and they’ve been steady as a rock as long as you loctite.

Recently switched to a fast micro on my home defense carbines. Loving it so far. In my most likely scenario for using a carbine (home defense) the pros vastly outweigh the cons imo. Ability to stay heads up is awesome. Being about to switch from optic to irons without moving anything on the firearm is a nice placebo as well. Obviously cons exist and are even more prevalent in other scenarios. HOB/zeroing issues are obviously there. If shooting at distance is common for an individual, the pros and cons start to weigh in differently. Personally, I would rather be most setup for the most likely scenario I’ll find myself in even if that costs me in other areas. Scanning for intruders/family/dog/etc is much more helpful to me than engaging targets at distance so I’ll tend to lean that direction with my setup. But it’s completely understandable if someone’s goals are different. It’s always a give and take.

Recently I have been using an old upper that has the integrated carry handle. I have a rail mounted on the top of the handle and an aimpoint mounted on top of that. Its a super high mount but what I notice is that its a lot easier and more comfortable to shoot and allows for some interesting stuff like being able to shoot out of the right eye or left eye by canting the rifle. Likely never an important feature but if one of your eyes was damaged you could still operate the weapon out of an opposite eye without needing to change your grip. It has made me a lot more interested in these riser mounts. I feel a lot more cramped when I go back to a rifle with an eotech on it.

I think some of this comes down to your body and size. When I try to passively aim with my EXPS-3, I have to squish my head down on the stock in an uncomfortable manner. With the riser, I can keep my head up and comfortably shoot. I haven't put a lot of rounds through my rifle with this setup, but enough to know it works for me. On my AKS-74U I have the Zenitco B-18 mount with a Holosun and it is similar in height. I also tried to passively aim when my Perst-4 decided to puke it's battery cap on a NVG stage. It didn't go well. I only had my monocular for a month so I hadn't had as much training on passive shooting as I do now. For most people, this riser won't be a gamechanger, and for me it only adds a bit of comfort when shooting with NVGs. Is that comfort worth $70-90? It was for me but might not be for most.

So I got a Unity riser for my eotech and magnifier on the advice of a friend. Shooting passively with nods is MUCH easier now though the chin weld thing is annoying. Having SBR'd my gun and ditching my brace has help a great deal though and the addition of a Law Folder has given extra length of pull to help keep from banging my tube up every time I pull the trigger. All in all, like you said, it's a trade off but for a primarily night time use rifle it works well, better than without. Just found your channel BTW, subbed. I appreciate your content, thanks!

Regarding magnification of RDS: if the mag is more often than not being utilized, then I feel a LPVO is better served. I feel that a RDS with mag is best served when the default is unmagnified and only there for "when needed" for PID or better precision at intermediate ranges. A do-it-all PDW/home "rifle". But that's just my ignorant dumbass talking 🤷‍♂️😂

For perspective, Eotech exps 2.2 is 11.2 oz + a G45 (5x magnification) is 12.8oz = exactly 24 oz. A Leupold Mark 6 (3x-18x) is 23.6 oz. And it can be illum with multiple reticles (like tremor) There are a few scopes out there that can out-magnify these trendy flippy single magnification units. I'd suggest people look at the VCOG or a solid (but light) LPVO, if they're wanting magnification.

Not calling Eotech bad, but I'd either go 5x magnify and NEVER take it off, or go straight to a 1-8x, 1-10, whichever I could afford. Same with an enemy. Why not have as much magnification you can, then scale back if needed? Pretty sure most soldiers in Afghanistan / Iraq would LOVE to have their pick of LPVO's and MPVO's. I had to think about it a bit, but your point is stupid - you have every luxury - a veritable buffet of optics most soldiers don't have access to - and you're saying "brah, 18x is too much, brah". That's retarded, considering some mid-to-long range scopes are LIGHTER THAN SOME LPVOS. That was my point. I'd be happy to take your Eotech once you get dropped, though.

I cant speak for anyone but myself, but I've found the higher risers to be much preferred to lower ones. I definitely prefer the head and neck position, and find it much easer to bring my optic into position. As to a cheek weld, well...that's easily solvable with a cheek riser on your stock. Larue makes one that is spring loaded so you can charge your rifle without the stock getting in the way. I run the LaRue riser on an ar with a 1-10 razor siting on a 1.93 height mount and its perfect for me. gets my head position where i want it without sacrificing cheek weld. On an ar type platform, this is an awesome option. As for the height over bore effecting your overall holds, their are excellent bullet calculators that you can take a look at and find the zero that works best for your particular setup. Getting that 3 inch ish over and under zone can generally be accomplished simply by adjusting your zero distance to accommodate your setup optimally. Much like anything that is designed to interface with a human body, different ergonomic setups are going to be preferred by different people, but what works for one person best, will rarely work for everyone best.

there is deff its place, like you said - mainly CQB for that "natural" feel. But It can work for other people in different ways. I have a super long neck and would test out my eotech with no riser for 6 weeks, then go back to the riser for another 6 weeks. I did this for almost a year and i settled on leaving the riser on. I found because my neck has to come way too far down without it and it feels so unnatural. THe riser make me feel MUCH more natural when shooting and its on my gun now to stay and will be there for a while

After using an ACOG+RMR for years, 2.26" seems quite low. Honestly though I put a unity combo on my 10" SCAR 4-5 months ago and I fucking love it. The biggest downside for me is shooting prone, you got to push your torso up just enough that it wears on the muscles over extended shooting sessions. I can't imagine doing so with a heavy backpack on. Also shoutout to DeltaThirtyFour, after watching his zeroing videos I spent hours on Strelok figuring out an optimal 4.26" height over bore zero.

My first optic was mounted on the carry handle of the musket I deployed with in 03 (m16a2), was really high but felt comfortable out to 50 ish yards then got a little wonky. For gas mask or any large headgear, it's great but for pure speed and accuracy there's a reason you don't see it in competition. Any product that gets endorsed by retired seals or sf gets way too much hype and these companies are very good at marketing and creating demand. My two cents. Rah.

I prefer an RMR on top of a TA-31. There’s also ACOGs available with BUIS on top. There’s no magnifier on a pivot to move. There’s reduced potential for interference with your field of view at any distance. Both optics are so reliable, I like to run a different zero for each optic. I run a zero on the ACOG to keep my BDC as relevant as possible. I zero the RMR for anything 100 yards or less. This setup works well for target rich dynamic environments.

Love the vids! Just one suggestion. When doing some room clearing, always clear corners, never turn your back to an open doorway that hasn’t been cleared and always check behind open doors. If you yourself cannot check behind, pin the door against whatever is behind it until a buddy can come up and peek behind with his muzzle. Done lots of room clearing in real life, just one thing that might help you out.

I bought a knock off one to see if I liked the height. I tend to find myself in a weird sizing for most parts where sometimes I would fall in a large fit category, but other times not. I find it nice when just using a dot and dry firing/mock clearing the house. On the other hand I also have tried using a larger stock (hight wise like the magpul sls vs a bcm sopmod) so I get a better cheek contact vs chin with a more upright head position. I think for me the best case use scenario would be strictly as a dot (haven't tried a 1.93 height however for comparison) without a magnifier on something like a 300 blk suppressed home defense. Anything like shtf or longer ranges I want magnification and a 3x magnifier won't cut it if a target is camo'd and/or in cover. So going with a LPVO for that load out.

I might also be one of those big neanderthal dudes too... either way, it certainly has its trade offs, but they arent huge or hard to overcome. I know many dudes that hate my fast mount be cause its so high up. But same way I hate their mounts that are so down that I need to really crumble to get a good sight picture. So its pretty much personal thing what suits you best. And I think that center flip magnifier is just a bonus if the mount fits your body style better than the lower ones. Then night vision if you use any will change the game completely. I believe passive night vision shooting is the only viable option these days when all sides have the nvg capability and they can see IR spectrum lasers and lights. But that's only if you do operate at the night time too. I don't say IR lasers are useless, but you should train to shoot without it. Its good for pointing things out for you squad members, but its not good to use for aiming since it gives your position away if your enemy also has nvg's.
