This year referees are under instruction to make sure there is 90 minutes of open play and l have not heard one single person disagree with it. My own team were winning 1-0 away yesterday and in extra time one of our players took the ball into the corner to waste time as players have done for years. The referee stopped the game, awarded a free kick against us and booked the player. No one complained in the pitch or off. Should have happened years ago.

@@shucki2001 A lot of time has been lost due mostly to injuries to players. What has happened in the past is referees did not really take into account all the lost time for different stoppages and would simply add a notional time at the end, say five minutes. So that was one way the full playing time was lost. The other was deliberate time wasting as l indicated. So we now get 90 minutes actual playing time which is great. I should add that at the beginning of every season there is discussion between the various football bodies and referees about what needs to change for the new season so this is one change as a result of that. Another o e this year is there was a feeling too many penalties were being awarded for simulation and handball where the offender had little chance if avoiding it. So this season, fewer penalties. Again, good.

You know what's infuriating about these highlights in addition to the obvious one about not showing the time and score. The way they show every GD highlight AGAIN. Guy hits a meatball right at the keeper that is easily saved. DON'T SHOW IT AGAIN. Once was enough to showcase everything.

The extended highlights have time to fill. If they are a bit lacking it’s because they weren’t there in the first place. Remember this is a contest not a show. And that is the reason why for fans the whole thing is so compelling: you cannot tell what will happen. Maybe it’s not much but then again it might be a lot

There is no need to pad out the length of the extended "highlights" by replaying boring failures to score. If there aren't more highlights, then don't take up more time. Just have a 5 minute video. Nobody would complain about that we were missing all the replays of all that stuff.
