Red Eft Designs ~ Christmas Trees Kiln Opening ~ Unloading My Very First Glazed Ceramics ! Skutt 818

My very first fired glaze kiln in my brand new Skutt 818!
Watch me open and unload the pieces in the kiln and I'll tell you which glazes I used and how i applied them. I fired by the controller to Medium Speed Cone 6 with a 5 minute hold and a natural cool but it reached a cone 7 by the actual Orton cones.
The trees are slipcast in local Georgies G-mix slip, using vintage plaster molds of trees that i purchased on eBay.
There are so many glazes out there, so many combinations! I learned a lot about glazes from researching online and reading books. I hope this video inspires you to try some new combinations of these commercially made glazes.
I get two combos incorrect during the video, but correct everything in the last part and show a few of them again, so watch all the way to the end.

GREAT looking trees. As far as the ones that are stuck, I would leave them be. Your cookies are so nice looking and cut so perfectly, that they look as if they were meant to be a base for the trees. What I would call a "Happy Accident!" (Yes, I am a Bob Ross fan!)

Thanks! Thats a good idea, they do look pretty good considering. I don't have a great way of grinding the sharp parts off anyways so I'll probably just leave them be!

I love that you have slip cast pieces as well. I handbuild and do slip casting and you don’t see that much. If I can I’d just like to let you now that when you have a free standing witness cone the top of the cone should come to the top of the base part of the cone. So you got to a perfect 7. Just a little fyi. I’m loving your glaze combos!!

Nice first run! I got some ideas from your tree combos and the trees made for some great glaze testers. I would like to try my hand at slip casting......maybe you could do a video on the process? Thanks for sharing. 😁👍🎄

Thank you! It was definitely a great way to test glazes, and these were just my first round, so lots more crazy combos to come. I want to make more videos this year, that's a great idea to make one about the slipcasting process, i will!

Beautiful trees! You are lucky to have those molds and congrats on getting your own kiln. I made 15 plus low fire slab trees this year, I started to write the glaze color inside the tree for future ref. Thanks for sharing.
