Just a mini kiln opening video from before the holidays! 12/14/22
My work was on the top of the kiln and another artists on the bottom @hineini_ceramix you can just see a glimpse of her porcelain mugs.
Some great combos, a few oopsies and some fun underglazed pieces. Some slipcast and some handbuilt, no wheel.
This one fired to cone5 by witness cones, programmed to cone 5 in my new Skutt 818 kiln.
See my work in my Etsy shop and on insta @redeftdesigns

That crystal pattern on the side of that mug is so cool! How did you achieve that? I find if you use the flux under other dots for the peacock bowls it works great. Have the flux & colors touch each other they run much more. 😁👍 Like that matte purple glaze! (One that I don't have.....yet lol).

Hi! Thanks thats a good tip I will try it! So, i did make 3 peacock bowls total, 2 were not what i expected but one was amazing! More testing for sure... About the crystals, each is cut by hand i roll out a bunch of coils and let them firm up, then cut them to shape with an exacto, 12 cuts each. I will definitely make a video on it soon!

Can you share how big your Skutt is? I’m looking to buy one new, this is a lovely size. And your work is amazing as well.

I’m watching this again to see what glazes you used on your darker clays. May I ask what dark clay or clays you use? Trying to find some glaze combos for a Laguna red and chocolate clay. I’d also love to see a video of how you make your crystals and the crystal mug!! I LOVE them so much!! I made a bunch of crystals but I didn’t attach them to anything!! What the hell was I thinking, no idea! You said you cut them with 12 cuts can you explain that a little more? I’d really appreciate it. Thanks hun.

Hi, i actually use a clay i got from another potter. It was her custom mix but then laguna mixed it wrong and she had pinhole problems. I has an occasional dark speck in it but i don't mind. Now she uses laguna warm brown so i assume its similar. Hope this helps!

Ok the crystal thing, i will definitely work on a video for this. I'm into scientific realism so i try and make my crystals accurate but you can do any number of cuts. Check out a real quartz crystal, it has 6 sides. So i cut a leatherhard coil to facet it 6 times around the circumference. Then its still a length of coil. So i facet it 6 more times on one end so that end becomes a point, and theres my crystal. You can make them any width or length and you can make the tip cuts at any angle but if its 6 & 6 it will look like a crystal. Some people who are famous for their crystal mugs actually only do 4 but its up to you. Hope this helps!

Brown clay really makes you think! With a white clay you assume its not getting everywhere but it actually is! With brown you know where every bit went lol! I actually have to have separate boards for white and brown thats the only way to keep one from the other! What clays do you use normally?

@@RedEftDesigns That’s exactly what I was telling my husband!! Lol. I usually use No 3 clay from Minnesota clay. I live in Iowa and that’s one of the only clays I can get here unfortunately. It always has huge holes in the bag of clay which I’ve never had with any other clay. It’s really irritating. I’ve also use clay from Continental clay but they make their own and it’s just terrible. I’d love to find a good speckled buff clay but I haven’t found any yet.
