I miss seeing the bear recon aircraft flying over our battle group, while on was deployment aboard the aircraft carrier in the late 80's . Escorted by an alert fighter either a fa-18c or f-14 .

This is a rather chilled version of mass launch. Back in the 1980s we had a bit more hardcore stuff - getting an entire wing group airborne in 4 minutes from standstill. Planes were using taxiways and runways in both directions (just as a flight took off from one direction, another flight started their take off roll from the other direction). There's an interesting video about it kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3fbmXecf9Ofr8k

I was host base SEF ( flight Safety) out of 5th BW, Minot ND in March 98 if memory serves me. Spent 45 days there for Red Flag just prior (it was approved while there) to my retirement in Aug 98. I believe it was the first Red Flag without a class A mishap. We did have to send the Singapore AF back home I think. Many thanks to you Brits for taking me up in a Tornado...err..sorry, that was supposed to be kept quiet. Anyhow, fond memories from a retired Crewdog.

Was stationed at Nellis for from 06 to 09 and these launches would drive me up a freaking wall when I worked nights. Still nowhere near as bad as when the Thunderbirds would decide to practice as it seemed like they knew where I lived.

I think this is such an awesome display of air power at one time. I think all these planes are amazing. Even though I am a U.S. citizen and think we have some pretty great planes, however, I think the Tornado's and the Typhoons are amazing aircraft; very impressive!!!! Even though there are no Russian plays represented, some of the MIGS and sukhoi are totally dope. Additionally, f-16's may have been around for a long time and are flown by almost every Air Force that isn't communist; they are still very versatile planes. I cannot believe they have been in service since the early 1970's

@Derek Charette what a complete dickhead there is always one and that's you! Out of all the nice comments you have to spoil it with your idiotic comments you prat. The typhoon's dont crash no more than the American jets. I would back the typhoon against any of the American fighters it would only loose out to the F22 & F35 in bvr as the radar on those two has longer range but WVR even the mighty f22 & f35 would be toast against a typhoon.

Don't know why I am just getting this recommendation in 2019, but THANKS!!!. Not a pilot, but grew up as an AF kid "wayyy back", and in fact almost ended up at Nellis after Dad's (RIP) second tour in Nam. Wound up at Luke instead. But brings me to question. Very nostalgic seeing the retro VN era jungle camo on not only the F-16s, but also on the F-15s. ?? Even in 2013 that was out of date. Was that the designation, along with the blue camo planes for the aggressor squadron?

@FirstDagger
@FirstDagger 6 жыл бұрын
Nah, since WW2 aircraft in use with the UK have been named after weather phenomena, Lightning (both P-38 and English Electric), Tempest, Hurricane, Typhoon and Tornado. The name Tornado is more a result of the mission close and fast above the ground and has heritage. Also it isn't an acquired name, unlike US aircraft that is the designation also.
@dorsetdumpling5387
@dorsetdumpling5387 5 жыл бұрын
It’s a tip vortex, and most wings generate them so not unique to the Tornado! These seem to be more pronounced than usual though, and certainly more pronounced than other a/c taking off at the same time.. the Tornado does have a wing tip fuel vent (as opposed to the fuel dump vent which is on top of the fin) so I wonder if the tanks have been brimmed up and that there is an overspill under the acceleration of takeoff?

I remember being on Red Flag in the early 80's ! One wing clipped the airspace of area 51! When we landed we were escorted back to our hotel. Each crew member had an escort to our room, then we were escorted to the airport escorted on to the plane. Flew to Toronto, picked up and driven back to Trenton. Every member of the crew was given a life time ban from Las Vegas! Have never been back!
