If the British Typhoons flew out last week then I think I may have seen them in transit over Northern England over the Pennines at about roughly 40,000ft.( The airliners are usually at 32-34,000ft) Flying at intervals one after the other. We had Typhoons at low level up and down the Dale the same day, but the high ones were headed off somewhere distant for sure.

Please tell me why you estimated their altitude at 40,000 feet. Even an airliner is hard to spot in cruise unless they are producing condensation trails, and the Euro Fighter is quite a small airplane.

This happens every week but very low. They come through the Lake District valleys and either turn over the Cumbria coast or continue over the Solway into Scotland. The same thing happens with F22s and F15s.

They were perfectly visible with the naked eye and were leaving contrails. Also 40,000 is about right for a fuel efficient long transit flight by a Typhoon......at a guess. Hope that helps answer your question.

John Nunn.....Are you referring to the pilots shaking hands with the Crew Chief and maybe other maintenance personnel? That pilot knows that he wouldn't be flying at all if the maintenance men & women were not keeping the planes in the air. The Crew Chief is the last person who lets the pilot know that everything looks great and is ready to go. What you call ..."all that shaking hands crap" is the respect and trust that the pilot is showing the Crew Chief and the rest of maintenance. These are highly trained enlisted men & women who take their job very seriously and very personally.

I know first hand about the respect and trust between the pilots and us Plane Captains. The squadron was permanently land based at N.A.S., Norfolk, Va. One time some of our planes flew up to the state of Washington for exercises. Before they flew home, the officers bought some fresh Salmon to bring back. When they got back, late at night, I was there to bring them in. They gave me a big piece of Salmon. My room mate had a toaster oven in our barracks room and we lined a baking dish with foil, put the Salmon in it, added sliced and squeezed lemons, and butter & pepper, wrapped it up and let it slow cook for a while. Man, was that delicious...!!!
