Niestety straciliśmy pisklęta w obu gniazdach. Wielka szkoda. Po raz kolejny natura pokazała swoją okrutną stronę. Oglądałam od dwóch lat gniazdo pustułek we Francji. W tym roku było 7 czy 8 piskląt. Któregoś dnia zaglądam, a w gnieździe pusto. Wszystkie pisklaczki jednej nocy zabiła kuna... 😭

This was pitch black for the falcon. Mom could not see clearly what happened. Owl has advantage with their night vision. But this owl getting more daring.

Takiego zachowania ptaka drapieżnego w swoim gnieździe jeszcze nie widziałem. Żadnej presji na intruzie ...Pustułki zacieklej bronią gniazda.

To było w nocy i pewnie słabo widziała intruza.

I must say (and will do so with heavy, heavy sarcasm) that this is yet another example of these red-footed falcon parents showing their amazing parenting skills. I have seen at least five (5) essentially complete videographies, each with a different set of parents attempting to raise a brood. The examples of this species that they have shown have all failed at an epic rate. Frankly, I've seen the excuses that have been offered in the defense of each set of failed parents (nests either poorly positioned, left with too large of an opening, made with floors too slick...to it being too dark during this latest attack by an owl. Umm, yeah, whole no one here is going to dispute the owl's gifted eyesight, let's not forget that this falcon is a bird that is also blessed with incredible vision as well. While some are using the darkness of the attack as a complete disadvantage to the victim, mom bird clearly sensed something gone awry by way of her physical reaction at least a few seconds before the actual attack. In my view of such parental attempts, I've seen these birds incubate half their eggs at a time, while all the while one or more eggs were literally right in front of them. A simple "beak roll" by the parent would have sufficed in bringing said egg under mom/dad for incubation. I don't know what kind of anxiety appears to run through this bird, but neither parent could sit still on their brood for more than what seemed just a few minutes at a time. Then, after at least one chick had hatched, and SEVERAL hours had passed, the chick had still not been fed. As dad brought his latest kill to mom, she grabbed it from dad, and then proceeded to EAT THE ENTIRE MEAL HERSELF. I kid you not. There was not a single morsel fed, or left, for the chick. There were also many instances of mon/dad violently stepping/landing on a chick, or chicks. More than once I viewed what appeared to be a chick who was hurt by the parent's actions. While there are several other examples, I'll just go ahead and end with this video. The mother NEVER made a single peep...not a warning to the invader...not an emergency call to her chick to try and take cover under/behind mom...not a call for help out to the father...and lastly, nothing of an ongoing threatening nature to perhaps try and scare off the invader...nothing...absolutely nothing. Then, to add that final insult, mom did nothing to try and protect her chick with her own body. Mom spread her wings, but none of her was covering her chick. She also NEVER made a single physical move to try and free her chick...not once in over 10 minute. Even when the owl began, on several occasions, mind you, to tear the feathers off the chick, while at times piercing her neck and head with her incredibly sharp beak (which, by the way, is designed specifically for tearing apart flesh), mom just sat there, paralyzed. I don't know how this species has continued to survive in this world, one where nature is best exemplified by the 'survival of the fittest' in so many of our species. This species of bird not only appears to have almost none of the DNA-programmed instincts it needs to survive, but for the ones that actually do survive and then somehow reach parenthood, they do so with seemingly very little of the behaviors that are needed just to survive. For each subsequent generation, it would seem quite possible that even fewer of these object lessons will be passed from parent to chick, thus producing an even weaker version of the current species that may not be long for this world.

These cages must be taken down and destroyed. If you think you are doing the peregrines a favor, you are a participant in the death of their chicklets. Birds (and animal) are wise enough to determine a safe place to lay eggs and raise chicklet. To the owner of these cages: TAKE THESE CAGES DOWN ASAP and leave the birds ALONE. I hold you liable for the death of the chicklets...
