Uh, no. Lol. He was at best a decent parent relative to the time his character is portrayed in. God awful by today’s standards. Having a Golden Child to a cartoonish degree, constantly berating and using negative reinforcement, afraid to be vulnerable even with those closest to him, I can go on. Great character. But as an actual father would not be good. Certainly wouldn’t be following evidence-based best practice recommended by child psychologists and child development experts.

Red Forman, James Evans, Philip Banks, Carl Winslow, Andy Taylor, Dan Connor and Al Bundy were America's Dads when their shows aired. The proper representation of REAL dads not the embarrassing portrayls hollywood like to peddle. Fathers who were smart and tough yet cared deeply about their families and would do anything for them. The last actual real dads on tv that weren't idiot manchildren were Julius Rock, Mike Heck and Mike Baxter.

I think Eric said in the hunting episode he thought Red was only tough on him because he did want life to kick him around. Red served his country, worked very hard and kept struggling and that would be fine if the government at the time did promise something they could not deliver.
