The crazy thing is Red took him in even though he knew he couldn't afford to, and even with the financial problems in later seasons he never had resentment towards Hyde. These kind of people are rare in real life.

My dad was the same way with my friends. Put them to work, be hard with them. But he was also like a second dad to them. He once beat up my friend's dad when she came to our house with a black eye. Never got the full story out if him but her mom told me several years later after leaving the loser. He came storming up into yard in his truck, got out and started beating on the door. She opened like what the hell is this, the police? He walks in past her to him sitting on the couch, drunk, ignoring the world like usual. Picked him up by the neck, carried him outside and proceed to "give him a good whoopin" as she put it. She never actually told me what he did. Then she told me he said if you ever lay a finger on that little girl or that woman ever again, I'll end you. With a lot more profanity, she was paraphrasing. She never called the cops either. Helped him inside and he laid in the bed for a few days. Didn't even know what happened but never laid a finger on them after that day. My mom was pissed he did that, but so proud to be married to that man. Miss you Pop.

It sucks that Danny messed up and now can’t stream that 70s show cause it’s honestly my favorite sitcom. this was my show growing up and a lot of the issues are relatable in any era: stoner teenagers tryna figure out life. Hyde was a layered character. The too cool for school guy who had rough upbringing but thanks to the foreman’s he was able to stay on track and be successful. The last season was goofy with him being part black, fez ending up with Jackie and stuff but overall it was a consistently great show.

Red saying "you know I'd like to help Steven..." is powerful on an emotional level, but it was also great for the story. The audience would expect that he's an uncaring hardass, but would see the light and do the right thing. But that line tells the audiance "I'm not a parody. Obviosly I see the boy needs help and I'd like to help him, but the reality is we can't." After that, when he does turn around, it actually is unexpected, and the audience feels that much better about the resolution.
