Killed by "hunter" mid December.
"Kit Kat" is a two-year-old wild Red Fox who lives on our property on Long Island, New York. He befriended me in May of 2011, at approximately two months of age.
Since the spring of 2012, he and his mate have had two litters of kits. In April of 2013, while he and his mate were rearing their young, I began to see signs of mange affect him.
In less than one month he was completely infected from head to toe and in dire need of help. Thus I began to research possible remedies to save him. This research lead me to a detailed and informative website run by Elise Able of "Fox Wood Wildlife Rescue":
Treating Sarcoptic Mange in Red foxes
www.foxwoodwild...
Original link:
foxwoodrehab.ty...
It is because of this treatment that Kit Kat is alive and well today to help rear his young. Proverbs 12:10

Because I am in an unusual situation to benefit this fox, and as he has a good level of trust in me, the treatment was fairly easy to administer and I was able to oversee it.
Those who attempt this treatment on a fox may find that the fox does not return for some time after its first treatment. I have had this experience with other foxes on our property.
My instinct tells me that the treatment should be initially started with a lower dose.
I am in no way a professional in treating wildlife so I strictly follow the advice found through those with experience and expertise.

Thank you very much for telling us how to treat the foxes for mange. A couple months ago I saw the poor fox in our yard with hardly any fur and it was only about 15 degrees out. I immediately got online to see if I could find a way to help it and came across your webpage. After about 7 weeks of treatment the fox looks much better! It has all the fur back on it's body and the fur on the tail is growing in. I'm thrilled that I could help it out.

Thank you so much!! You have saved 5 or 6 foxes in the UK, they were totally bald and very young and would not have survived, quite a few of the others didn't . It has been administered via chicken wings and it is incredible to see their red fur already appearing, just in time for the Autumn and cold weather. Smiling from ear to ear :-)

I started dosing my fox yesterday (Monday). First saw him on Sunday, and I'm hoping I am not too late. He is emaciated, completely furless and covered in scabs. I left two treatments at two different locations (three hot dog pieces with one pieced medicated, and a cup of grain free dog food). This morning I returned to the first location. Two pieces of hot dog were gone, and thankfully, one was the medicated piece. The dog food was left. Later in the morning, I went to check the second location (about a quarter mile from the first), and he was there. He saw me and ran off, but stayed nearby. I checked the food, and all three pieces of hot dog were gone; but not the dog food. Today, I left a hard boiled egg and a raw egg at each location (untreated). While I am concerned he may have received a double dose, I read where that should not be a problem. I'm pretty confident he will return to the second location, so if the eggs are gone tomorrow, I will only leave the medicated food at that location. Starting tomorrow, I will leave meatballs. Fortunately, this fox is close to a water source, so I am hoping he is able to get water. As thin and frail as the fox appears, I am hoping he will respond to treatment. I did notice today, he stood and looked at me for a long time and did not scratch. It may be just wishful thinking, but I swear he acted better. Please say a prayer for me, and for the fox. I would also appreciate any and all advice you are able to provide. I will keep you posted.

This is a nice, heart-warming video. Thank you. Of course, it's easy enough to spot a fox with advanced mange, but the chances of a full recovery are so much better if you catch it early - so I thought I would share with anyone looking in what I have found from observing my visiting foxes over several years. These are early indications that your visiting fox may have picked up a mange infestation, visible long before significant fur loss occurs. Most of these can be observed at a reasonable distance - one of them you can only see fairly close up. 1. Tail beginning to look a bit straggly and thin, not as bushy as normal (mange very often starts at the rear end). 2. Fur looking generally a bit scruffy and off colour. (although from June through September this may be just the usual summer moult) 3. Fox dragging its bottom on the ground to relieve itching. 4. Fox scratching or nibbling at itself a lot more than usual. 5. Fox generally lethargic, moving more slowly than usual. 6. Fox sleeping for long periods, often in fairly open space. 7. Fox struggling when the weather is hot - breathing open mouthed, looking generally exhausted. 8. Gummy eyes - conjunctivitis (this you can only see from close up.) Of course, there are other problems that might produce some of these individual symptoms, but I would suggest that if you see a few of them in combination, especially the straggly fur and excessive scratching, you should assume a mange infection and start treatment a.s.a.p. before it gets any worse. I have done this with a semi-tame vixen who visits me, sometimes with her currently eleven week old cubs, every day and who had all of the symptoms I have listed. After just two doses of ivermectin, I am already seeing significant improvements - gummy eyes now clear, more active, coping with the heat. not scratching as much and coat beginning to improve. I think the tail will be the last thing to recover 😊 I hope you find this list useful. P.S. Even if the fox doesn't have mange, you won't harm it by giving it ivermectin, so what have you got to lose, apart from a small amount of money? (I realise that sounds a bit like Trump with his hydroxychloroquine, but it isn't really, because that stuff is useless, for Covid-19 anyway, and not safe at all.)

Hello Jeff! Nice to meet you in Costco purchasing treats for wildlife! People like you inspire me!! I live off of the Northern State and used to have a pair of resident foxes 8 years ago. I would buy them chickens in the winter and they were grateful. Unfortunately, I saw two dead foxes on the entrance of the NS the following spring, and haven't seen any since. I continue to feed all the local wildlife, provide them with fresh water, and keep my property virgin from chemicals. J-R

Now you can see why 95% of my cart was not for me. ; ) Sounds like you did good for your foxes, yet sad to see them subjected to our environment. You may still have some passerby foxes in the middle of the night traversing the neighborhood. Sadly, all things changed here after this fox was deliberately killed. Though on a positive note, one of his children from last year has been revisiting regularly.

Thanks so much for the information. I know this video is years old. I have 3 gray foxes that come to eat twice a day when I feed the deer and one is really skinny with hair loss. I recently lost my dog to illness and old age and this little skinny fox keeps me company while I'm outside. He follows me around and lays close by curled up. I am hoping this medication will cure him because he has brought me some joy after a painful loss.

I started the treatment, exactly as you outlined, yesterday. I am going to try to get pictures of my fox. He is alone. He comes to get his egg everyday. I started him on Baytril today for infection. My fox really looks bad right now. He finally got close of me to see that his eyes are almost closed and his face and ears are full of mange. I am giving him the .2ml of Ivomec and will give his 2nd dose in 2 more days. Will he get some relief from the itching soon? What vitamins and dosage of them can I give him in his food. I definitely know that he is getting his medication because I can see when he eats the hard boiled egg
@SuburbanWildLifes
@SuburbanWildLifes 9 жыл бұрын
cindy schultz Cindy, pardon the delay. if you offer some nutritional food along with the three day 0.2ml of Ivomec vitamins won't be needed. It is powerful medication that should do the trick if properly administered. I always use either fresh raw beef or cooked chicken. The beef is easier as you can carefully inject the Ivomec inside of it. They love raw eggs as well and may prefer them raw. But if you're having such good luck with how you're proceeding you may as well continue but offer some beef and chicken as well. They'll eat corn on the cob too, cooked. I'll toss one and the fox grabs it enthusiastically. Good luck and please post back.

+Suburban Wildlife My fox started to look better and then didn't come back for the food anymore. He came back a few days ago and he looks bad again. Not as bad but bad. I have started him on the ivomec again. He loves the hard boiled eggs. On the days he doesn't get the ivomec, I am feeding him cat food, beef and he still gets his egg. I will make him some corn on the cob today. He will not take the Baytril and spits it out just like the dogs do. So, I have to think of some other antibiotic for him. I will keep you posted.

My foxes got this heinous bug a few weeks ago. Local animal control won't do anything except come finish them off when they finally become immobile. The one that got it first is in a bad way. I hope I'm not too late for that one, but now he spends most of the day in my yard. I'm going to give this a go and see if I can help them. The only competition for the hot dog would be my neighbor's dog, so I told her what I'm up to and she's on board.

How satisfying it is to see him at the end of video with his lovely bushy tail. He knows you helped him. I am surprised his family was with him throughout the ordeal. My family of foxes, was rejecting the dad few mths back, but now it seems his partner are eating with him. M using a homeopathic (Arsenicum & Sulphur 30c) 4 drops everyday Unable to get Ivermectin or Bravecto. My cat is due her 3 mths (dewormer & bravecto spot on) I have given the fox one of my cats dewormer (got a few tablets that I did not use, its brown small tablet) the bravecto for my cat (other one passed away in March) is a spot on treatment, wearing gloves. Do you think it might be ok to give it in the fox food? My only worry is my cat is 12.5 years old with thyroidism (benign tumour) might need it for her ears as her immune system is not as good. I was not giving them the dewormer tablets as I have 3 tablets as I was told it’s not important if the cats are not out. Only the one that died goes out on a leash. Anyways how do you do it, so the others will not take its food. Since these foxes are now coming to my flat, I feed them from my balcony. Sometimes I leave them cat food overnight…usually feed them early morning between 3am-5am as it’s getting lighter now. Only problem I can’t see properly, only reason I saw his mange was I was taking a video zoomed in and noticed his tail was like your fox & his lower back was also affected. Been giving the potion since mid march

I've started the experiment too. The fox I am working with is in bad shape and I think it would die so I had nothing to lose. It has no hair and is skin and bones, and it would wonder around in the day time. So far It ate two small .1cc doses two days apart. It is already acting more fox like maybe because of the food it is getting. I pretty much trained it to come at 7:30. The trick is, there is a second fox without mange and so far that one comes later. Using a trail cam helps a lot, can figure out their feeding patterns.

+cindy schultz I am feeding mine canned cat food. I think him getting the vitamins and protein from the cat food is helping him a lot. It takes a lot of patients and keen observation. The interesting thing I found is, the healthy fox that I gave snacks to from winter time hasn't eaten the cat food in the past few days. I see her on the videos and she trots past. It is almost like the sick one I enticed in has taken over the area. Also he tags along with the healthy fox and she doesn't like it. In one video she turns and barks at him, he puts his ears down and she trots off and he trots off following her again. So he is feeling better just from eating high quality food. In the end a car will probably run them over but while I can I will make their lives better. They get rid of the mice and I give them a snack. I have a couple videos of the healthy fox on youtube.

Watched your "Fox kits and mom" video... great footage! Beautiful black fox, too. I've never seen one in person before... What I did in these situations was split the 0.2mL dose and separate the food, always being sure that not one fox would ingest more than the recommended dose; three small meatballs was my choice. Based on my experience with these trial and error situations, the foxes always benefited, though they did not receive consistent doses nor over an extended period of time. cont'd..

Hi. I'm in NY as well and just began treating my fox "Winston" a few days ago. He's a bit worse off than Kit Kat, but your video gives me hope that he can be saved. I'm curious, did you continue to give Kit Kat the same dose of ivermectin, every 3 days, for the entire three months? Also, did any of her family members contract mange from close contact with her? (I'm a bit concerned about my resident skunks and raccoons) Thank you, and also I'm sorry for your loss.

Hi MsTlc333... Considering you're in NY and it's damn cold outside, Winston really needs all the help he can get. If your able to feed him well, do so. He will freeze to death if he's not well fed with a high protein diet. Chicken without bones and ground beef. I gave him 0.2 mL (0.2 cc) orally every three days for the first three weeks, and then every five days for the last two weeks, for a total of five weeks, following Elise Able's recommendations which she describes as aggressive treatment. Yes, some of the others did get mange and I dosed them as well, though not as aggressively.. just enough to help them along. I dosed a raccoon as well during this period when mange was rampant. Let me know how you're doing with this. I hope it works out!

Suburban Wildlife Thank you. I was feeding Winston 4x a day, raw and cooked turkey and chicken, berries, eggs and following Elise's medication schedule. He had moved into an empty dog house on my deck to stay warm. Smooth sailing for 8 days, until the heavy snow came. Noise from shoveling, snow blowers, roof rakes, neighbors being outside, etc scared him off. He'd run off before and returned, but has not returned this time. I'm afraid that means he did not survive. At least he had warmth, plenty of food, and relief from itching for a while.

+Mark Blodgett Thanks for writing Mark. A couple of Kit Kat's offspring did show some signs of mange though it was under control. I dosed them as well, half the Ivomec (0.1mL). Towards the end of this video you can see one with sparse fur following him. They all were violently scratching away that summer. One of his offspring has been here quite a bit over this summer and I dosed it just tonight and last Friday.. scratching a lot and looking a bit shaggy and unkempt. I don't believe there's any solution concerning the recurrence of mange, it's a matter of observing and dosing if needed. I'm on the north shore near Huntington. What you viewed on my video is not a facility but only our home, where these foxes, at least a dozen deer and a whole host of other creatures are taking refuge. ; ) Let me know when you're visiting. Looking forward to seeing some photos, or better yet video of the fox you're treating. Good luck!

I see the difficulty here... The only approach I can think of is to split the dose and spread out the food. Draw the 0.2mL into a syringe and inject it into three meatballs, spreading them out to areas where you've seen the fox, or assume it will pass through. This way the fox is at least receiving some if not all of the treatment. I hope this helps and please post back with any updates.

Thank you so much for helping such a beautiful creature. There is a very sick fox, it looks like (Sarcoptic Mange) in my neighborhood. He's been coming to my backyard for few weeks now with his brother/sister. His/her situation is worse than the one you have here, his/her eyes can barely be open to the point that he can't even see or notice my Dog until he's right by him, my Dog is little and she's harmless. I started feeding him/her couple weeks ago and started doing to research and found your post "TREATING SARCOPTIC MANGE IN RED FOXES". I gave him/her Bravecto today, put it in a small pieces of chicken and watched him eat them all. Do you think that would help? do I need to give him another dose sometime in the future? I don't mind the cost I just can't stand seeing him suffer like this and want to do whatever it takes to help him/her get better.

I know this video is old and I'm not sure if it's being tracked anymore, but due to a construction site that destroyed a fox den (and killed two of the kits inside the den), the oldest of the foxes in that group got stressed and mange took hold very quickly. With the help of a wildlife expert, we're beginning treatment. Is there any new information you can offer? The other two foxes show no concrete signs of it yet, but they all live together. They're also very tight-knit, so I'm not sure the doses will go to only one fox. Will it hurt the others to get treated too?

This is amazing work! Has anyone considered contacting a local Wildlife Rehab Centre to catch the foxes and treat the mange and secondary infections. I'm not sure if this is just a Canadian thing, but that's what we do here. They are medically treated, monitored and once healthy and their fur has grown in, they are released back into the wild (within a certain radius where they were caught). Recently I worked with Wildlife Rehabbers to catch two foxes with mange in my neighbourhood. They can use both live traps and nets. They're both recovering now at a rehab facility. it's important to get a rehabber that has experience in dealing with real wildlife and not just cats and dogs. We can't get ivermectin on amazon in Canada or I might have tried doing this on my own, but I'm happy the foxes have a second chance at life now. Mange is such a cruel disease.

I always use fresh raw ground beef for the baited food. Make a small meatball and carefully inject it with Ivermectin (0.2 mL). Using an egg can be problematic... it's possible that the small amount of treatment may not be fully or at all ingested. From what I've learned, a non-grain dog food is ideal for foxes. Corn on the cob (cooked) and pears seem to be a favorite, too. Are you at all overseeing the treatment?

Thanks for this video. I watch it every time I get discouraged. I have been treating a male fox following Elise's advice from a feeding station in our yard but he is getting outcompeted by as many as 5 other foxes due to a limp from an injury and I haven't been able to dose him consistently. I had him regularly feeding between 9:00 and 9:30 for about a week but then he is coming later when all the other foxes show up and I'm afraid my deterrent techniques have only made him more wary and the others more bold. Question: Should I go back to the original feeding time until he figures out that he needs to come earlier while stop putting food out later? Or should I just stop putting food out altogether for a few days to a week and start up again? Thanks so much and I'm sorry about losing Kit Kat. I can empathize.
@SuburbanWildLifes
@SuburbanWildLifes 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. That's a tough call... and you're reminding me of how easy I had it. If your instincts are such that you believe feeding earlier will be helpful, I would try it. It is a bit difficult to see in your videos, but it seems this fox isn't terribly infected. The fox I treated got to a point that he would walk closely around the house during the daytime hours, behaving oddly. This behavior is typical of a mange infection that is overtaking the animal; they can't sleep, they're starving, parched and miserable. Is it possible for you to be on the lookout while there is some daylight left, early evening? is there any consistency that you've seen in this fox's pattern re when it comes around? I figure, continue feeding since you have the fox around.
@foxrehab6214
@foxrehab6214 10 жыл бұрын
Suburban Wildlife Thanks for getting back to me. Your video and Elise's coaching inspired me to help this fox out because, indeed they are so miserable it's hard to witness and do nothing. The videos are from when he was already dosed and significantly improved. Like your guy I first encountered Mo (that's what I call him) on our porch and then wandering around aimlessly and listless during daylight hours. He had no hair and was practically skin and bones. By now he has reverted to nocturnal behavior and is no longer erratic and he has hair regrowth. But my concern is that I've only been able to dose him 4 times over 8 weeks which is a far cry from the every 3 -5 day protocol of Elise and he might relapse. I have kept a daily journal of his appearances but I can't discern any real pattern. One day he's there at 9:00 and then the next he's there at 10:00 and then the next at 11:30. To accommodate this, I have been leaving food in 20 - 30 minute increments between 9 and 11:00 but then it's a lot of time for all the other foxes to come around. As an experiment last weekend, for four nights I camped out hidden near the feeding station with a squirt gun and took aim at the other foxes as they approached the food but Mo didn't show and my tactics only made them hang around and break out into petty fights trying to get at/protect the food. I would then see on the video the next day that Mo would show up between 15 -20 minutes after I'd left by which time some other persistent fox already got the eggs and meatballs. Unlike the other foxes that have adapted to my drop pattern, Mo hasn't done the same and I have also seen him completely ignore the food altogether (video) which I don't understand - I was hoping you could lend me some insight in this department, but indeed your experience with Kit Kat was unique because of your long history together and home base was on your property. But I will take your advice and follow my instincts to scale back and maintain consistency only between 9 and 10. Short of capturing him, there is nothing else I can really do. He will have to figure it out. Again, thank you, thank you. Sorry this is so long.

Fox Rehab Thank you... That's really good of you to go to this extent; it's a passion not all people can or want to understand. Your situation is really tough and frustrating for you. If you continue to carry it out this method, including camp outs especially ; ), it will work out... sheer tenacity! As I was putting out a meatball with Ivermectin, I did not include any other food until the targeted fox ate it; warding off any others foxes if need be. After that it was party time. I know that this probably won't help much, but I thought I'd let you know my particular approach. Another possible approach is to spread two or three meatballs to separate, but nearby spots, splitting the small dose among all of them (not 0.2mL in each). I'm not sure how Elise would react to this, but if you're not having any success it seems that this would, at the very least, provide some medication. Where are you located?

Suburban Wildlife Oh I'm not giving up that easily! Definitely in it for the long haul. I've just hit a rough spot and need to try something different. Thank you for your ideas. Yes, I have scaled back on the food and am putting out less and sticking to the 9-10 schedule. If this doesn't work, I will try what you suggest and spread out the snacks. I think Mo's injury and resulting limp is the major factor in his wariness. I notice that his limp seems to be disappearing though, so that might change things. I will try camping out again in a couple of weeks or so. I do have better things to do, of course. But I rather enjoy it, actually. We live in VA. Wish my luck!

I just stumbled across this video while beginning to research how to help a fox in my back yard. This is exactly what is going on with my fox. It is heartbreaking. Your video is beautiful and I was crushed to find out that yours was killed. @SuburbanWildLifes

We dose our outdoor cats Ivermectin (0.1mL) once per month. In my opinion, if you're wary of other animals taking the food, you should reduce the dose in half to (0.1mL) and try your best to observe what is going on, including a trail camera at the baiting site if possible. The every-three-day dose of (0.2mL) is "aggressive" treatment and should be carefully monitored. At the same time, other wild animals can benefit including raccoons, opossum and deer as this is killing off the rampant parasites in the environment, though again, it's important to take it seriously and monitor as best as you can. Please let me know how you do...

also i just read this :The Fox Project, a conservation group based in Britain, says on its Web site that "spectacular recoveries [from sarcoptic mange] have been achieved by use of two homoeopathic remedies," a combination of arsenicum and sulphur and a second dose of psorinum. However, "positive results are less convincing on foxes suffering more than 40 percent visible mange." The National Fox Welfare Society, also in the U.K., suggests feeding foxes sunflower seed oil, fresh liver and vitamins A and D to help them recover from mange. ANY thoughts?
@SuburbanWildLifes

I'm in the UK too. When I decided I ought to start treating my visiting fox for mange (very early stages, thankfully), I looked at both the homeopathic (arsenicum) and the ivermectin options. I went for the Ivermectin because the success rate for the homeopathic method is about 30%, whereas ivermectin will generally be successful, certainly in terms of killing the mites that cause the disease. It doesn't guarantee recovery because foxes with advanced mange may have secondary infections which can only be cleared up by antibiotics, or, if they are in the late stages of the illness, may already have suffered irreversible organ damage; but if these complications are absent, then it is very likely to clear the illness up completely.

If I have been seeing a mange fox during the day at about noon and 5ish and gave it a treatment then all of a sudden wasnt seeing it but seeing a mange fox on night cam at about 8.30p, could it be a different mange fox? Before treatment this fox looked terrible, bony and weak, but the one on night cam looks more active but you can still see it has no hair on its tail. I am afraid it died and have cried for days. I saw a mange fox on night cam and wondered could it be the same one. I see a fox at night also with a bushy tail and one with mange, but I havent seen a fox at all during the day anymore. Hi Moxy.. The first question that comes to mind is whether you've seen more than one infected fox at a time. If not, it's probably the same fox but you will never know unless you can distinguish it between others. All information can be found through the link in the description. I have even posted a link to an image showing the small amount of Ivermectin.

We have a wild Black Fox who now has this too. It's almost January and it is losing a lot of fur so worrying about cold. We want to get some of this medicine ASAP but having trouble getting it. Can pet stores get it or do we have to send for it?

Hi Mike... Make some calls to your local vets and pet stores. It may be possible to find it local to you. I bought "Ivomec - Cattle & Swine 50ml" from jefferspet[dot]com. There is a link posted below this video entitled, "Treating Sarcoptic Mange in Red foxes". Please be sure to thoroughly read about the treatment and post back with any questions.

Mike, check with a feed shop, I think Ivomec is used on cattle and horses as a de-wormer. I think there's a feed shop in Kittridge isn't there?

Now about 5 weeks into treatment and it's working well. Can see the fur coming out on the fox's tail. He is sure a lot more shy now and usually comes around in the late evening so hard to actually track his treatments Thanks so much for this information to save this fox..

Mike Paslay That's great news Mike! A couple of ideas come to mind with the shy behavior... As the fox in my video healed he became less desperate for help and returned to his natural wariness. Also, it is mating season and hunting season! I've observed foxes become very wary this time of year. There is no foliage for them to duck behind so they're more visible and they know it. Unfortunately the fox in this video was killed by hunters just down the way from me!

He was coming around in the early evening but now after 10 pm so not sure he's getting the meds. Also very cold (minus)so wonder if that affects the ivomec?
