I did the same hair color for my bday but I used the L’Oréal hicolor dye with 40 volume developer. I should’ve used this method to save me the trouble of having to buy so much dye. However, I would say applying the dye directly on the hair instead of water coloring it does make it last longer.

Yes applying it by hand definitely lasts longer . However, it is more expensive and time consuming.
