Hi guys, I agree 100% when you not too many Australians are going to start eating camel in the infrastructure that you have to have to do it on a viable market would be incredible up here in Queensland and west that used to be a big trade on wild pig to Germany but unfortunately the government got involved too much and squashed it now no one makes a dollar out of it not too many people eat wild pig Germans make sausage out of it. It’s a bit like kangaroo make if you asked how many people would eat that I believe that would be a high percentage that would say no way the same like camel meat, even when it comes to goat, meat, , you’ve got enough on your hands keep the station going, Anyway keep up the good work love the videos Cliff from Logan City Queensland Australia 🇦🇺👨🏻‍🦽

Yup, as I think I mentioned elsewhere, there is a Camel Farm in HArrisville in the Scenic Rim, west of Brisbane , just down the road from my Brother's farm - They don't even bother trying to sell meat, and Camel Milk isn't all that popular - the cheese from it is passable.

Nicely done Jasmin, Jack and the lads.. I like the discussion and debate about the viability of harvesting Camel. It's an interesting discussion and somewhat a unique issue that Australia has.. Of course it's not limited to Camel.. Across our great nation there are millions of feral and native animal which could be sensibly harvested and therefore utilised as a food or other resource.. Just think about some of these.. Pigs Horses Camel Goats Deer Rabbits Hares Foxes Cats Feral Cattle (particularly in the Cape) Water Buffalo etc.. Then we move to the Native animals. Kangaroo is a great example, often shot and seldom utilised.. Possum particularly in Tassie.. often shot and seldom utilised.. (thank you AUS government). etc. But how do we logistically dispatch / trap these animals and get them to a largely non existent market and make a dollar out of it.. Of course the best thing we can do for the planet/environment is utilise the resources in some way.. Shooting them is also utilising them, as in they become food for insects and other animals and when decomposed add nutrients back into the environment.. but of course this is a less effective utilisation of the resource than consumption or fur trade or something else.. It's a dilemma which could make a great deal of money or simply cost a great deal of money. I would think the most likely market for many of these animals would be the pet food market.. but of course dogs don't buy pet food. People by pet food. Therefore these meats need to be marketed to people for pets.. (and maybe Humans) I remember as a child living in the Western Suburbs of Sydney my mother (god bless her) would send me to the local pet shop to buy fresh Kangaroo mince.. It was cheap and the pets loved it.. but it was even then intended for pet consumption only.. although I suspect during the tougher years the family may have also shared it.. Thank you again for the excellent content

I read the farm is a million acres and its a 15 hour drive (in a car) to nearest 'large' city (Perth - pop c2m). Imagine the cost of infrastructure to set something up $ms . The camels are being shot across such a large area and you can see the state of the roads. All sounds good but the reality is very different.

The main thing Jack, according to my logic, yes all domesticated animals are not indigenous(cats/dogs/goats/cattle/sheep.chickens) but, even us as europeans are exotic, to many continents, however, we have settled all over the world and domesticated animals are farmed and controlled and managed, so if any animals that are not indigenous to a country/continent are allowed to become Feral, then they need to be controlled, removed, exterminated etc whatever term any Bunny Hugger wants to use. this is the main difference. If there is no market for Came/horse/goat/pig/rabbit/rat in Australia, then they need to be removed. It would be far easier to farm camels than cattle, however, beef is more acceptable to the muppets so you farm beef. End of story, you guys are doing a sterling job mate.

Another point on the camels being viable. what people don't realise in your environment , being a long way from market and there not being a lot of feed per acre , the cows both camels and cattle , especially older ones don't carry a lot of meat on a carcass, Therefore the abattoirs don't like to process them, with cattle in the Nor' West, we'd buy cows but only as a favour if the station owner would send us a lot of bulls and steers.,

Since finding your channel a couple of weeks ago, I've been wondering if there's not a market for the camel hides. I did a real quick google search before commenting. It’s seems like they make for some decent leather and brings a decent price because theres not a large supply.
@veridian79
@veridian79 5 ай бұрын
Possibly could be, but they have to be treated soon after skinning, salted in a large hopper, we used to use a concrete barrel off a truck. The leather industry does not want any hides that have "battle damage' scars on the hides. You also have to take the hides off without knocking/putting holes in them. it is a very labour intensive industry and you need to streamline the process, which involves a bit of machinery and metal structure. The blokes that in an earlier video that took those camels for pet food, were very quick and skilful in their work, There pet food industry is a bit more lenient on how food is processed as opposed to how meat is process for human consumption. Some animals carry disease so there is a need for inspection, At an abattoir the animals being processed are checked throughout, from arrival to going into a cardboard box to the fridge/freezer. which is a good thing as it stops a lot of unscrupulous practices that could occur and have done in years gone by.
@buckinthetree1233
@buckinthetree1233 5 ай бұрын
@veridian79 I completely understand how labor-intensive leather production is. You're correct with everything you stated. There's no way that you would have time to do any of that. I was thinking more along the lines of having someone you could call, tell them where the camels are, and let them harvest and process themselves. Here in the States, one of the hands would probably start skinning a few out in their spare time just to make some extra beer money.

The ideas are all the same that we have had before. Unfortunately we are even too far away for a constant pet meat program. We have tried! People can’t really just “pop” out and do a job as we are 700kms from our closest town that has facilities and labour! 300kms to a small mining town. It’s big distances for a very small market!
@buckinthetree1233
@buckinthetree1233 5 ай бұрын
@jack_out_the_back that's understandable. I guess you just keep on doing what you're doing. It's not any different than the feral hog problems we have here in Texas. Nothing is done with those animals after they are exterminated, either. There has been a big increase in the number of people who trap them and then feed them for several months before selling them to a processor for human consumption. High prices in the grocery stores are the only reason for that, though. I enjoy your videos, keep'em coming.

Again, it comes down to the Logistics of getting things to Market, coupled with Government regulation.

You know, I reckon the biggest problem you have there is educating ignorant Europeans like me in just how big Australia actually is. I'm used to the idea of being able to go from the northernmost point of the UK to the southernmost in about 12 hours on roads. Roads that are ALL tarmac, safe, have bridges and not fords and generally don't have wildlife on them. Try going east-west across Australia and that's an easy 65 hours non-stop. Australia is BIG. Shifting loads in Australia is only worth while if the value of the cargo less the shipping costs, catching costs and whatnot leaves some profit in the deal. Catching camels likely doesn't because pet food is the very bottom end of the market, and at least one obligate carnivore pet in Australia is heavily frowned upon now: domestic cats. Frankly you'd likely do a lot better putting in an effort into domesticating a species of fairly omnivorous possum that is already common in Australia.
