I remember being perplexed by why she would leave her with her father if he was an abuser too but I will say that does happen in our communities they will leave the kids with relatives they know have a penitent for abuse but then tell the kids to watch out for said relative....make it make sense

This movie definitely is the product of the early 2010s lmao. It was glad to see Lee reprise his role as Mookie and Tracy Camila Johns as Nola Darling lmao

So the mama was setting her son up ? Why would she send him to a p.d.o.? What in the hell ?
@kadriyebuyuk5583

Maybe that was the point her sending off her son to redhook could symbolize sweeping stuff under the rug and how families still have young family members around known predators and also protecting them. Idk I’m just assuming.

Basically because the way she dropped him off she didn’t even want to see or talk to the man so it doesn’t make sense that she felt comfortable to leave her son with a man she couldn’t even stand to be in the same room with. Remember I think he invited her in and she wouldn’t even go in his house…

I remember the 1st time seeing this and was mortified at the molestation secret and as you stated how religion was used to cover up sexual perversion. I didnt understand why the mother left her child with the grandfather either. I'm glad that more light was shed on situations like this but the manner in how it was done had me perplexed. I love Spike Lee but this was on a list with the films that I didn't like. I believe Sucker Free City may have been the last movie I saw before Red Hook Summer. Thank you for the review.

Ironically I’m from Brooklyn and the town he left 15 years prior is called Waycross, which my mother moved us too when I was a teenager to get away from NYC. Waycross is the swamps in SE GA. Very common to hear that a church paid to keep it quiet. Everyone knows everyone there

Red Hook Summer, Sweet Blood Of Jesus and Chi-Raq even though i kinda liked Sweet Blood Of Jesus and Chiraq. Those Spike movies that came out between 2012 - 2016 just wasn't it and it was a weird time to be a fan of Spike's work.

I agree with you, Tyra that 13-year-olds don't speak that way (besides Spike acting like a 13-year-old while writing the movie) because my 11-year-old nephew Russell doesn't speak like that. I'm sure that Tyra's daughter doesn't speak that way as well so why the movie did that is very stupid.

@@StruggleReviewzTV yea, the reason he had to have a doctor perform surgery to not physically perform is because mentally he could not stop or help himself. And to your point I don’t know how a mother could intentionally leave her son alone for a summer with a man she knew violated someone to the point to where there was a settlement involved. I really don’t understand what Spike Lee was trying to say with this film other than the sheep in wolf’s clothing thing

I havent seen this movie in a while, but i thought it was good when i saw it. It was very shocking of course, but I felt that some of the scenes were powerful The acting may not have been great, but to me, it made the people feel more real. Like...it felt like i was looking at real people and not at actors. I should probably rewatch to analyze it properly. I thought it was going to be a normal coming of age movie until the horrible...predator stuff...

But we have to remember that we are all sinners. Pedophiles, murders, thieves and liars are all sinners. There is no degree in God’s eyes and He can save us from all sins no matter how depraved and horrible the sin.
