Although they are emitted in small quantities in the air, PFCs contribute to climate change because of their high global warming potential (GWP - 100 years), on average 7,600 times that of carbon dioxide (CO2), ranging from a factor of 6,500 (CF4) to a factor of 9,200 (C2F6). These large values of global warming potential are due in particular to their long life in the atmosphere, ranging from 2,600 years (C3F8 and C4F10) to 50,000 years (CF4)

Ozone (Oxygen-3) is depleted by the addition of halogens like chlorofluorocarbons and hydrofluorocarbons. Pretty much the only thing the average consumer comes by capable of depleting ozone (significantly) is refrigerants (which technically you're supposed to have a license to handle). Although widespread use of haloalkanes in things like propellants, refrigerants, fire retarding agents and solvents is still an issue. But burning polysytrene does release chemicals toxic to humans and animals, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which do stick around in the environment for a long time. The only issues with burning polysytrene are health related, and if done really improperly, bad for ecosystems.

Wow in Germany you would get in serious trouble for this. Even if the fire department won't come, the police instead would. You'd have to pay a big fee for harming the atmosphere and burning "sondermüll" illegally....

@TheBackyardScientist8 жыл бұрын
Thats just silly, all the pollution from private citizens and households is only a small fraction of what is made by industries. Furthermore, burning my foundry for 6 hours makes more co2 than burning that small amount of styrofoam. All the black smoke looks scary, but its just carbon from incomplete combustion. Dave has a point about other chemical byproducts, but these generally break down within a period of days to weeks.
@Taunus-Tim8 жыл бұрын
TheBackyardScientist Nevertheless it is strictly forbidden to burn any kind of poly-whatever plastic in Germany. CO2 is not the issue here, but all the byproducts that are carcinogenic. We take stuff like that very serious over here, especially because the average population density here is much higher than in the US. Our ministry of traffic is debating about banning diesel vehicles out of bigger city's right at the moment for example. You never get Polystyrol or other plastics to burn nearly complete to CO2 under normal circumstances. You will always end up with a lot of unknown and random carbohydrates that may be toxic or not. And the amount of toxic aromatics that you can smell is just a small portion of the toxic products. The majority has not even a scent. That aside. I didn't want to be a hater here. Just the opposite exactly. For the purpose of doing any kind of science, especially if it is for public consumption like your videos, i think it is sometimes okay to bend the law a little. In fact i greatly regret that i couldn't do those kinds of experiments at home. When i would burn Styrofoam in my backyard, even when i live on the countryside, the police would close in on me in several minutes. I would have to pay up to 50.000 bucks for penalty. When i would make nitroglycerin just like Cody's Lab for example i would have to sit in jail for a long time. Even if i did it on my own property and even if i did not detonate it. It is strictly forbidden to produce any kind of explosive. That's just how different most states of the US and Germany are.

Myconix i don't get this one at all, sorry. What is a blanket ban? Not even google is able to translate this sentence for me in any way that it makes sense.

how is a $1000 mattress a "fraction of the price" ?
@ACTlVISION8 жыл бұрын
All rational numbers can be expressed as fractions
@bacon.cheesecake8 жыл бұрын
a fraction of the price of other mattresses of equal quality.
@HealthyFamilyVarietyChannel8 жыл бұрын
Because $300 and $400 mattresses start to die in a year or two or three. And so many people that make over $125,000 a year, buy mattresses that cost $2000-$5000. ......(Also, people that value their back and health, and that budget their money, will also tend to buy more expensive mattresses. Because it works out to be cheaper in the long term.)
@thatdudebro8 жыл бұрын
Healthy Family Variety Channel i bought an amazing mattress (memory foam) for $1000 cad. i'm not saying this is over priced but i've always said mattresses are WAY too expensive. the profit margin is still way too high on the products. (this is why they always go on sale for 50% off etc. same goes for designer glasses. cheap as hell to make but marked up for hundreds of dollars..) he made it sound like what it SHOULD be for an independent company. a high end quality mattress for maybe $500. it's very possible but people are greedy.
