I've been trying for a long time to figure out what happend exactly to him because his whole demeanor and everything like changed after he re-joined the band again and got drug free. It's like he's a completely other person, not as extroverted, smiling, wild and charismatic as he were before when he first joined the band. He even looks so differently from his younger self that it's hard to even tell if this was the actually the same person we're talking about.

I doubt he actually hated it, considering how thoughtful he was in everything he created. I suspect that he resented the album for skyrocketing them into being the biggest band in the world, which he never wanted, and truly hated, and severely worsened his self-sabotage. John has a similar mind. In his first interview in his house and after the first time he left the band, he said that he didn’t think they would get much bigger than they were when he joined, and that he hadn’t wanted it to happen. Then BSSM blasted them to stardom and he quit the band and is lucky he didn’t die in those following years.
