All it takes for me to watch a movie is to know that Dame Judi Dench has chosen to be in it. I was proven right. Dame Judi Dench is the light and soul of this movie. She doesn't act, not for one moment. She becomes the character she embraces. With an amazing cast in tow, she leads this movie just where it should be: up there, at the very top.

Olivia Colman actually addressed the issue of roles for older woman in her post Golden Globes victory speech - she said that she hoped there would be more roles for older women as the older you are, the more you have to say because you have had more experience.

Un film qui malgré ses invraisemblances hollywoodiennes habituelles avance au moins deux vérités: les Américains n'avaient pas besoin de larguer les 2 bombes, ils étaient bien évidemment informés que le Japon allait capituler incessamment après avoir perdu la bataille stratégique de Mandchourie contre les Russes, donc les crimes de guerre contre les populations civiles d'Hiroshima et Nagasaki n'ont servi qu'à impressionner les soviétiques qui de toute façon se sont munis de la même technologie voire supérieure immédiatement après. 2ème vérité contre la propagande “l'Europe c'est la paix”: non, ce n'est pas l'union européenne qui a instauré la paix entre la France et l'Allemagne mais bien le statu quo de la guerre froide, ce glacis géopolitique avec la menace que tout pète à tout moment d'une part, et d'autre part le vieillissement de la pyramide des âges. Les langues commencent à se délier et des esprits libres et honnêtes s'expriment face à l'endoctrinement narratif qui nous a été imposé.

Why do these 'period' dramas consistently fail to produce anything like a convincing impression of the period? People in 1940s Cambridge didn't all drive around in showroom-shiney cars! The urban environment was actually much grubbier then than now, yet filmmakers nearly always ignore that fact and go all out to create a pristine fantasy past mired in sacharrine nostalgia and wishful thinking. Name me one 'period' film where people drive knackered cars and have food stains on their clothes!

This movie is abhorrent, mostly because it is said to be based on fact? In the Movie Joan is a Cambridge Physicist and scientific prodigy, who we are told came up with idea to use a centrifuge to purify Uranium amongst other things. But Melita Norwood on which the movie was based did none of this. She attempted to study Latin at Southampton University , dropped out after a year and moved to London where she landed a Job as a Secretary at the Top Secret Tube Alloy Project despite the fact that her Communist activities (and those of her Communist Husband) were known to her employer. She was just a typist and secretary, with no knowledge or insight at all about the subject matter or what effect it and her actions might have on the world. Her activities were not due to some noble intention for world peace or inspired by the horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki as suggested in the film. Her motivation was Russia and Communism. She was a Communist spy and a traitor to her country. This movie is nothing more than a very ill judged load of old feminist claptrap, that will leave its audience thinking that Red Joan was a heroine of some kind as thus so was Norwood. I have spent all my life championing the cause of TRUE and REAL female scientists who were scandalously overlooked by the Scientific Establishment. But no one makes any films about them. Artistic licence is all well and good in movie making but making a real life traitor into a fictional Heroine by her own countrymen is UNFORGIVABLE.

I guess I will have to watch the movie to see if she gave the Communists the bomb. It has always nauseated me the way those traitors pose as noble saviors. They betrayed their country. They gave the greatest murderer in history (Stalin) the worst weapon in history. The deepest pit of hell is too good for them. Khrushchev later said Russia would have been twenty years achieving the atom bomb without these traitors, and might never have achieved the Hydrogen bomb. If they had not betrayed their countries there would have been no cold war, no Korean war, no Vietnamese war. No nuclear arms race (that may yet destroy us, if any of the weapons get loose into irresponsible hands). Was there ever a greater act of evil in human history than the traitors who gave Russia the bomb?

Her character is awarded sympathy for averting WW3. That's one way of looking at it. Another way is that she handed the Soviets information that kept them in power long enough to murder tens of millions of people. It is also possible that had they not had the bomb their totalitarian regime would not have lasted, collapsed and all those murdered lives saved and still no nuclear war. Perhaps she is guilty of being naïve, but she was in a position of responsibility and under instructions to which she betrayed. The inspiration that her character was based upon was not naïve, and knew exactly what she was doing.
