Just the fact that you're debating between this 2200$ camera and the incredible 7000$ A1 is very encouraging for someone like me who doesn't have infinite budget. The OM1 looks like it's a stellar camera. It seems like the AF issue is very minor and can be fixed with a firmware update anyways. Fantastic shot by the way. Thanks for the video.

Hi Mike, I don't know why, but I hadn't spotted or watched this video before. I was at Gigrin Farm a week ago and had booked the Tower Hide (still £35 per person!). I had my Nikon Z9 with the recently introduced Z 180-600 lens and have also made a video of my experience there. I was really pleased with the results. I was mainly taking stills at 20fps but also shooty some video footage at 120fps which allowed some very smooth slow motion which i was particularly pleased with. As always, loved your video and found it interesting to compare the different angles you got to those I got from the Tower Hide.

Superb, I love a day out at Gigrin. Best tip I got was to put your camera down and just watch the birds for 5 or 10 mins, that way you’ll get used to their flight and habits before they dive, then just follow one bird with your camera, it too easy to get over excited by all the action and just start waving the camera about from one bird to another. Lovely movie slo-mo.

Lovely images again. Choosing between these systems is not easy: the camera bodies and respective lenses work out at about the same cost, so it comes down to AF speed, accuracy and features for me. I've owned a Sony A9 and A7R4 + 200 - 600mm and 100 - 400mm G Master in the past, but now own 2 x OM1 bodies and a 300mm f4 + MC14 and MC20. Though the A1 is truly superb, and I loved the 200 - 600mm, I would go with the OM1 and 150 - 400mm: The AF speed and accuracy may not be quite as good as the A1, but the OM1 features better IBIS and weather proofing, plus in camera focus stacking and focus bracketing, plus the marvellous Pro capture.
@cliffday11832 жыл бұрын
Your last sentence sums it up pretty much really Peter, the additional features available are for me essential , covers a multitude of genres, albeit for birding I'm still running with a Sony A9ii, 200-600 as well as Olympus kit ( EM1iii 300 pro, TC etc etc )atm, until my OM1 arrives

100% true on price. at pro level, just buy a whole new system for birding. no need to keep on your current brand. Unfortunately the OM-1 and 150-400 are on backorder. So, until the music starts we are stuck what we have.

I missed this video when you published it for some unknown reason. What would be your choice, a 500mm f/4 or a 100-400 lens and which hide offers the best of both worlds?
@MikeLaneFRPS6 ай бұрын
I would have both lenses with me, but would use the 100-400mm mostly. Any of the tower hides. The main advantage is an open front to be able to swing your lens. The extra height is a small advantage.

Your findings are in line with mine. I guess that the algorithm that calculates the AF adjustments as the distance to the subject changes needs some fine-tuning; either it over-reacts or is too slow in adjusting the AF. On the other hand, the subject recognition is really fast and the SH2 mode will deliver far more frames than you need. In all, I am very pleased with the performance of my OM-1. By far the best digital camera Olympus/OMDS ever made - so far.
Could you please comment on which of focusing array you were using on the OM-1? Small, Medium, Cross?? I'm assuming C-AF, not C-AF+Tracking. As you mentioned always using the Subject Tracking for Birds. Thank You.
@MikeLaneFRPS2 жыл бұрын
All focus points active, C-AF with birds subject trackign active.
@hemligx-sson82022 жыл бұрын
If you use subject tracking + C-AF + Tracking the camera will try to focus wherever the bird is in the frame. If you use subject tracking + C-AF, the camera will find the bird wherever it is in the frame, but only focus on it, if it’s inside the array you have chosen. English isn’t my first language, so perhaps it’s a bit unclear what I have tried to explain.

Well that's my next holiday sorted. 😀 BTW I've had my Panasonic GH6 since the beginning of March and love it. Yes its a video powerhouse, however what surprised me was the quality of the photos that it creates. In my humble opinion the GH6 is far superior to my older GH5 by a considerable margin. The auto focus on animals and birds is like which-craft with its ability to stick to the subject's like glue. Even though my Leica 100-400 is six years old, pairing it with the GH6 body is like putting on a brand new lens. I've never had such a high volume of pin-sharp bird images before. With the GH5 I was lucky to walk away with just one or two good shots on the day.

Thanks for the videos Mike I'm at a crossroads myself I already have the om1 mark ii and the em1x but I I'm looking for more, the Sony is out of my price range but I'm seriously considering the Canon r5 with 100mm to 500mm lens witch is there or there about with the om1 and the 150-400mm. The 45mp on the r5 is appealing as I also do landscape but I've already invested heavily in olympus. I take on board your recommendation very seriously as you seem to be the only one with an unbiased view. I look forward to more of the same. The pics from the om-1 are amazing as always

The one thing I would say about the AF difference between the A1 and the OM-1 is that the A1 has been around for a year and has no doubt had some refinements and improvements via firmware updates in that time. I am sure the OM-1 will get firmware updates that improve things over the next 12 months, so reverting the A1 back to v1.0 might have been a more accurate/fairer comparison
@rubacolor2 жыл бұрын
You are always the best photographer in this photographic genre. Olimpus can now compete with the queen of Sony A1 autofocus and it's really a challenge to be able to choose. Right, if you can affordably, keep both cameras considering that the full frame format has the advantage of a larger sensor for cropping. Congratulations on your always great videos.

Mike, superb video and comparison. Thank you. A question which Olympus lens did you use for the stills shots with the OM-1?? The 150-400 PRO is a very expensive lens where I live. Would you recommend a M3/4 lens that is less costly for similar action bird photography. Thanks.

Hi Mike, Great video as always. Just wandering in the comparison between the OM-1 and the A1. Could the lower percentage of sharp frames for the OM-1 be caused by the higher frame rate? E.g. is it more difficult to adjust focus at 50fps than at 30 fps? Hope the OM wins so we all can have a more affordable high performance camera out there and no i use a Canon myself😏 Love your feedback, Wim

Hi Mike, as always a nice enjoyable video. May I ask? I have always wanted a OM-D E-M1X . I can now afford one used. However with the new OM1 I wonder if it is really worth the extra cost. Being a wheelchair bird photographer I do have limitation, but what I am wanting to know is your opinion on the E-M1X as opposed to the OM1. Is it really worth the extra cost over the E-M1X. Your thoughts would be appreciated. cheers from Australia

Hi Hanz. If your target is wildlife/birds and challenging subjects then the OM-1 is definitively worth the extra cost.

If you want to photograph birds in flight then the OM-1 is a huge improvement. Otherwise you will enjoy a brighter sharper viewfinder and the ability to shoot at higher ISO's, which may not be so important to you.

Excellent and useful video as always Mike. What makes me a little sad is the final sequence when you follow that kite displaying the two #98 markings fixed on the wings. Catching a bird and putting the identifying rings around their feet is already a great stress for the animal: this one is far worse for the bird and has long-lasting consequences on the bird's habit. Isn't really impossible for us to avoid this 'tracking procedure' for the bird's sake?
