RED KOMODO +: NINJA V: Does the Atomos AtomX do the job?

Great video, I hadn't considered having a proxy recording on KOMODO because I've been using the SmallHD monitors, this solution works with my Blackmagic Video assist 7" 4K so moving forward we'll be rolling with a 4K proxy backup just in case...

Hey Carlos, can you please confirm that is working fine also on the B.M. video assist 7 “ (that comes with sdi in/out already no need for extra modules as on the ninja v)also is it possible to trig when rec and stop the internal monitor recordings? thank you guys

Does the SDI output still work when using the Ninja's "locked screen" mode? I would like to be able to use a viewfinder behind the Ninja, with the ability to hide the Ninja's screen at will.

Thanks for the rundown, Bryan. I've just got two questions: (1) RED's website says to connect the BNC cable to the accessory first, then to the camera. So it doesn't matter which you connect first? and (2) Have you tried setting the Komodo's SDI display out to HDR and viewing in PQ mode with the Ninja? Thanks!

Hi, on my komodo and Ninja V only a 1080 a 2k output works. 4K output is not working. Do you have an idea what might be an issue?

Until Atomos works with the RED protocol, allowing menu controls, it’s kind of a terrible pairing. Trying to use the top touch screen for camera controls is not easy during an event.

What happens if the batteries die on either the camera or the monitor while the sdi is plugged in?

I use a Wooden Camera battery slide with the extension on my RED Komodo. This allows a Canon BP battery to sit on the camera with the V-Mount, and if the V-mount dies the power will automatically switch over the the Canon Battery. Because of this setup, I have never had my RED Komodo run out of power because a battery died. Do I need to purchase SDI RAW ($99) from Atomos website to use Ninja V+ with Red Komodo? Is there a setting in the Atomos menu? HDMI is listed as an option, but AtomX SDI is not. I cannot get a signal to the Ninja and I followed the instructions to make sure I didn’t splay the SDI port.

No you don‘t need to buy that license. I use a Komodo and Ninja V on a dailybasis like this. Just plug in the Atom X Module and it should show up in the Input settings where you can select HDMI or AtomX SDI

Thanks for The video explanation! Just a quick question that I think is crucial to use the Ninja V as proxy recorder: does it support SDI trigger recording? Meaning when you start recording on the Red Komodo it automatically starts recording on the Ninja V. Thanks again

@@FedericoChiacchio of course! Happy to help. For atomos recorders - you only need the SDI cable (and the SDI atomx module that connects on the battery slot of the ninja v/v+.) The EXT port would be used for something like SmallHD with Red Connect - which lets you control the red Komodo via the 5/7 inch smallhd screen. That’s just to control the camera. But the SDI (which would also be plugged in) transmits the video signal. So, for atomos monitors/recorders and red Komodo setup you’ll only be using one cable. The SDI one to only see the video transmission. For smallhd screens with the red connect license (like $400 and is a separate purchase in addition to the screen) you’ll use two cables. The cable that connects to the EXT port to control the camera AND the SDI cable to transmit the video signal. The benefit of the atomos monitor / recorder is great though if you don’t need to control the camera from a larger screen as with the small hd because (and to answer your question) you can record R3D Raw on the Komodo to the Cfast 2.0 and then ProRes (via the atomos recorder) to the Atomos Ninja for redundancy. With SmallHD, you only have video transmission (no recording.) It’s super helpful that if you run out of space on the space on the Cfast from the Komodo, you can still record ProRes footage on the atomos. Or if something happens to the footage on the Komodo you have backup on the atomos. I have both the smallhd Cine 7 and red connect for red Komodo and ninja v so ask away! 🙏🏾

just baught the atom x and my ninja v just loop of and on all the time .. do I need to baught the raw licence ? its anoying !!
