Red Komodo X 6K | Behind The Scenes with Hawaii Footage
A look behind the scenes of our quick shoot with Red Komodo X in Waikiki, Hawaii.
I took the camera out for a test spin with Miss Hawai‘i 2021 Allie Chu for a lifestyle + surf session. This is very similar to a lot of situations we find ourselves shooting in, with Komodo and V-Raptor: unscripted, b-roll sequences to fill in storyline content for longer videos.
Red Komodo X handles like a champ with an image we'll definitely put on a sequence next to V-Raptor any day.

Probably my favorite Leica R in the kit for flares. They're all unique and fun, but the 19 is definitely my go-to to get that magic! What else you got in your Leica R kit?

@@BradWatanabe I had an almost complete set (15,19,28,35,50,60,90) but sold everything except for the 35mm summicron and the 19mm V1. For my komodo I barely used the other ones. But I actually regret that I sold the 15mm lol a beautiful lens

@@ZEROFilms_ 19 & 35 are such gems. 80 is amazing as well. 50 is a great lens on V-Raptor, but 19, 35 & 80 are my favs.

Wich micro shotgun did you use? And with Wich rig?

I don’t really have a full rig, but accessories are a mix of smallrig and Red components. The shotgun is a simple Rode VideoMic NTG which is surprisingly great for an on-camera solution. I love the audio level knob on the back.

Camera is not cheap with the accessories but it looks like it's getting the job done. What software do you use for your color grade?

We pretty much stay in Premiere throughout our workflow. If we need something with more control, we'll drop into Davinci. How's about yourself?

How is the Audio on the Komodo X? What audio cable and mic are you using😉

Appreciate the kind words... and yes, I'm actually super impressed by the audio quality of the 5-pin preamps. I'm honestly even more impressed with the quality of the onboard mic. If your subject is close enough to camera in a pretty quiet room, I think it could be usable as an interview in a pinch... though I would always try to have another input device. I'm actually using a custom cable from Mutiny, that connects 5-pin to 1/8" male. I can plug that directly into camera and wireless lav or Rode VideoMic NTG for quick, on-camera config. @@BradWatanabe Thanks for getting back to me and the link to the Mutiny cable, will get one on test it on the V-Raptor. It’s good to know RED has done an upgrade on the Audio on the Komodo X. The original Komodo’s audio is really bad 😟

@@DarrylCarey Audio on Komodo X is superior to what I’m getting on V-Raptor preamps for sure. Definitely usable for a lot of projects.

with the screen on Komodo x . does the heat from the sun affect it any way with constantly heat on it ?

I haven't noticed any specific effects or problems that arise. It's the same mechanically as Original Komodo which we haven't encountered any issues with. hope that helps.

Nope. All manual focus with Leica R lenses on the primary shots and MF on Canon 16-35 on behind the scenes shots

Allie is a professional model and former Miss Hawai'i who regularly works with swim and surf brands in Hawai'i, and this is a simple collaboration piece she also wanted to produce to share with her partner brands.
